Hi all,

New here on Mybroadband, although I've been using advise from here for years. Great site.

Now, just a quick question, and if a mod can help, even better. I read through the T&C's and there's a line about no advertising, but I'd like to start a thread talking about a business we're starting in Gauteng. The thread will not be advertising, but rather explaining the new business and requesting some assistance from those in a position to help. The idea of the business is to get to a point to start employing freelance as well as full time developers. But we're a start-up... long road ahead.

Anyway, just like to get a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on whether I can post here.

Tnx!
Dawie

Dawie my bra, it's all in the way you word it.

I think if you are looking for help, you can post away. If you are looking for clients, contact the mods and ask about advertising.

Thanks guys, not really advertising to sell something (yet). Its a new project we want to start development on, but we're doing a crowdfunding campaign. So I'll post anyway... worst case the post gets deleted.

Crowdfunding for a social responsibility or uni project is one thing but you must be smoking something if you want to do it for a sales, invoicing and CRM app when there are so many free and open source alternatives.

Lol. Tnx nfbs. :erm:

Its an App with a bit of a twist, and with a Social responsibility component. Will post it, critique is very welcome!

BS social responsibility. You want to make money.

Show me a business that doesn't. But making money to the detriment of your community is morally against our principles. Working in banking for 9 years, and it grinds me how low we'd go to get people loans which they can't repay and then end up black listed or worse.

So, yes, we want money, but we will be pushing the App for free to those that can't afford it.

Oh.. and forgot to mention. Part of my community are "South African Developers". Again, our corporates (first hand experience) out source coding to India, China etc. I do not agree with that, and as a matter of principle will never outsource my own business' coding out of the country. Therein the largest portion of the required funding will go towards local developers to build the App. How many free / open source App does that to SA developers?

PS> Not fighting or flaming if it comes across like that... just very passionate about this topic, and I do enjoy the opportunity to raise my thoughts.

Then you intention is misplaced. Informal businesses like street vendors, hair dresser ,tuk shops have no need for a free sales, invoicing and CRM app as they are cash only businesses and they won't even be able to afford a tablet to use it on. The businesses with enough volume to justify such an app will clearly have the money to afford it.

If you have been in banking so you would know that the banks outsource to India or bring in Indian developers so they don't negatively impact their BEE scorecard with local pale males. Although not very moral this is still the exception and not the norm so trying to make like you will use the funds of your crowd sourcing campaign to employ South Africans is not a valid reason for it to be socially responsible.

Definition of a small SME in SA is a business with a turnover of around ~R2M - R4M depending on who you ask. Didn't look it up so can be out with a couple of million, but anyway, still to prove the point these are not informal street vendors. These are genuine businesses which makes a real difference in SA.

As for BEE and scorecards and stuff. Whatever... If a person can deliver, it doesn't matter to me what race he is. Sure, if it comes to it we will not be getting Goverment Tenders or massive grants, but we will still be delivering an internation product. From my nick, you'll see I'm not hiding anything, and as such our Business will be the same.

nfbs, why does it seem like you don't agree with the idea of giving SA developers work?

Dawie Botes you should work for government with the amount of spin you can put on your project. ;)

You just created a startup idea and you are in the stage of excitement and motivation and you want to change the world. I don't mean to discourage you and wish you good luck with it I was just questioning your intentions as I feel the social responsible component of your project is leaning to being disingenuous.

I don't have a problem with you linking your crowd funding campaign here in this thread.

Great stuff nfbs! You're going to be on my Beta testers list! Got me wondering there!

Anyway, if Bill Gates wasn't excited about Windows or Steve about a little white music player where would we be today? Hehe... Ambitious, I know.

But ja... We do have good intentions and if we don't at least achieve some value to someone other than ourselves then its not worth pursuing.
