Dear all,

I've been asked to fix a relatives PC, please can you give me some advice.

PC has been running sluggishly and lagging (I'm formatting as we speak), yet relatively high end and its using XP.

The PSU is only 350W(and its an unbranded cheapie), is it possible that it could be causing problems with these System Specs :

Pentium D Dual Core 3.0Ghz
2048mb RAM
Intel Desktop Mobo - D946GZIS
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT
1 LG SATA DVD-ROM Drive
1 500Gb Maxtor SATA II Hard Drive

Please help,

Thanks!

400W will be alright, got a Gigabyte Superb 550W that I can sell to you for R550.

If the PSU wasn't sufficient, the PC wouldn't POST/boot up properly and/or it would shut down if tasks became too intense.

Is the 6-pin graphics card power connector plugged in?

Not so clued up on that CPU... Seems a bit old, although it is a dual core. Could it be bottlenecking? Anyone?

Otherwise a good old format would do the trick. Best to reinstall Windows every 6 months or so.

That CPU would likely take a 9800GT and not bottleneck the performance because my dad has the 940 version of the Pentium D and he can run the 4850 on a 400W.

Nope its definitely a bottleneck!

At least get a conroe...or try overclocking it to 3.6ghz+

And if the psu is weak, it will cause bluescreens and sluggishness....

Get a better psu and a conroe or better!

Definitely the psu is insufficient. For a cheap quality psu get the cooler master extreme 460Watt.

A bad PSU will not make a pc sluggish. It will cause some other things but sluggish is not one of them.

I wouldn't risk my components with a cheap PSU
