My car needs a new gearbox I had a quote of R12,000 incl Vat and labour at a specialist gearbox place in CT.
Is this reasonable cost and how much km's can one get on a renewed box before another problem?

Is that price for a reconditioned gearbox? What car?

R12'000 is a bit stiff if it is indeed a recon.

We just replaced a gearbox on one of our delivery vehicles(Ford Ranger 2.5) and bought a brand new gearbox for R12'600 incl VAT. Fitting would have cost us about R1000 if done at a workshop but our mechanic is fully qualified to do it himself. So total cost would have been R13'600 for a new box.

I suggest you shop around a bit more. Somebody is trying to get rich quick at your expense.

We got quotes for recon gearboxes for the Ford. Prices ranged between R5'500 and R7'000. It is a 2007 Ford Ranger Supercab. I cant think a 2003 Polo's gearbox will cost more than the Ford.

It is totally impossible to say what sort of mileage you will get out of a recon box. If it's done correctly, then it should be the same as a new one....but we now have to ask why your box broke in the first place. If it's through bad driving, which is 99% of the reason for a box breaking up, then we have to ask how long is a piece of string.

my driving is 90% stop/start traffic which contributed to the above

Stop start is hard on a box, but driving style also is a huge factor.

I know that we all think that we are God's gift to the driving fraternity, but it is worth going on an advanced driving course and being taught some mechanical sympathy...will save you and your car in the long run.

I just replaced my 1998 Toyota Conquest 16i gearbox with a reconditioned one (oil leaked out of the old one, ran with no oil for about 4 months and ~3000km's), the new one with fitting cost me R7200 including the taxman's cut and fitting, only a 6 month/20000km guarantee though.
I used Edenvale Clutch and Gearbox, give them a call for an alternative pricing.
