Hello,

Could anyone maybe give me some advice on what oil I will need to do an oil change on my scooter?

I work in Rosebank and would like to go to a shop to buy oil and a new spark plug etc. What is the best shop to buy this from?

What else needs to be done on a scooter when servicing a scooter?

Thank you in advance.

Francois

Should all be contained in your scooter manual. What type of scooter do you have? Perhaps give the brand a call and ask them directly.

At the very least you'll want to change the oil, oil filter, air filter, brake pads (or shoes if drum brakes) and spark plugs. Those are all easy things to do yourself. Take a look at the tyres and see if they need to be replaced.

Depending on how standard those parts are, you could probably get them at any bike shop or branch of Midas, or you might need to go to the dealer directly. As far as oil is concerned normal 20W50 should be fine. Personally I prefer to use fully synthetic for all my vehicles, but it's more expensive than mineral or mixed, and probably not entirely necessary for a small scooter.

Other things you might want to do on a service include checking the valve clearances, wheel bearings, injector or carburettor condition, various rubber components like hoses, bulbs, brake fluid, head stock bearings, etc.

I would recommend this oil - Castrol Magnatec 15W40
It is not as 'thick' as 15W50 oils, and is half synthetic.

On 4 stroke engines you will need to adjust the valve gaps of the valves. For my 125cc its every 4000KM. You should try and get the manual.

I need to take my scooter for it's first service this week. 500km :)
Also a MotoMia 170cc

"What do services cost?
We keep the service price at the lowest cost in the market - just R 399 for the run-in 300km service and R449 for services every 2500km. The service on the 250cc monza is a bit higher at R499 per service due to the special oil that we use."

Personally I wouldn't trust even the dealer to do a good job with these services. My experience with these cheap scooter dealers is that they do a rush job with their services, they often don't tighten bolts correctly or to the right torque, and who knows if they even change the oil or not. If you are able to, rather do it yourself. At least you know it's done properly.

This exactly. This was my experience with MotoMia.

Just do your own service. It is much cheaper and you can ensure quality work that is done on time. It is also fun and easy :)

Motomia has been liquidated, so you need to find someone in your area that knows what they're doing. I recommend looking in Edenvale or other areas with lots of bike riders.
I assume the OP was referring to the Java 170cc; the manual is here (for now): https://www.motomia.com/manuals/Java-170-Manual.pdf
Warning: it is in Engrish, but still readable (?)
The engine oil it specifies (under "Lubricities oil brand") is SF SAE 15W/40(crankcase).
You should only need 900 ml, but this is where it gets confusing:
"Lubrication Capacity 0.9L
Oil Capacity 0.11"
Um yeah. Do not overfill! Rather stick to 900 ml in case of doubt.
Also don't confuse lube oil type with fuel type or gear oil type, like I did.... :wtf:
The spark plug recommended is NGK's C7HSA.
