Hi there,

I'm looking to try out TF2, CS : Source & CS1.6 in the next few weeks :)))))))

I'm also going to a lan in 3 weeks time where I know someone who has all those games, latest versions e.t.c. . Please can someone advise me on what I need to do to play these games on SA Servers.

I assume I will need to buy keys on steam (Will I also need to download steam?).

Is there any other ways to purchase these games on the internet other than credit card? (Getting a Credit Card might be difficult)

Can I Use Steam on Local Only?

Cheers,

If you have an abundance of bandwidth you can pay and download the games via steam. The steam client is a free download and you just activate the games you have. Unfortunately there is no other way to get these games on the net without a credit card. The only other way to avoid this is to buy the games. The Orange box this has TF2 in it but not CSS. You will have to buy HL2 for that. Unfortunately unless you have a CC and an uncapped account, buying the games is the only real alternative.

Edit: BTW - No you can’t use steam on local only - Cost - Orange box is about R300 and HLF2 probably about the same. It is obviously cheaper online as there is no packaging, but you will end up paying probably more because of the massive downloads.

Once you have activated the games in steam, you can copy the source files from another computer to yours. This will save the massive downloads.

i don't like Valve cause i had to reg Left4Dead and i need int bandwith to start a local internet game or to play in one

TF 2 and CS: source cost $20 each. You can buy them on steam, but copy the game files from a friend. This will save you alot on downloads. Also I would suggest Rather buying the orange box, as it's about R300 or $30 on steam and then you get HL2 and episode 1 and 2 and portal as well as TF2.

Haven`t done this before, but i don't see why it shouldnt work.

Download and install steam, ask your friend to make a backup of his games with steam, restore it on your computer, buy the licenses, activate it, and enjoy

edit: be ready to wait for eternity for the backups to complete

It doesn't take THAT long, but works 100%.

I made a backup of my entire orange box for someone else. IIRC he bought the license online.

thanks for replies guys :)

So I can't just copy the game files? My friend has to specifically make a backup with his steam client?

You can copy the game files, that should work fine. ;)
There are sometimes problems when making backups via steam, I'm not sure if that's been sorted out yet, but otherwise, installing from a backup is a more user-friendly and safer option.
