Advice please! Sharing an ADSL line.

I currently have a 1meg ADSL line in the Cape Town city bowl. I'm not displeased with the speeds I'm getting but have seen an opportunity to upgrade. New neighbours moved in who don't have internet yet and have expressed the difficulty they are experiencing in getting internet from telkom. Without going into the details there is some complication with the wiring in our block of flats and as a result their internet order is being delayed severely.

The opportunity I saw was to upgrade my internet to a 4 Meg uncapped line and split the costs with them.

The only concern I have is: How do I share the bandwidth equally? I don't want to experience lag spikes while I game because the neighbours are downloading. And equally I would see it as unfair if I'm watching youtube and slowing their download rates.

Question: Is there a way of spreading and regulating the bandwidth across local IP addresses? If so how.

Thanks guys. Any advice would be much appreciated. Potentially I could improve my speeds, cut my costs and save my neighbours a lot of suffering.

Well, you can always get a router that does traffic management. I know the TL-WR1043ND does (I have it, and it works fairly well). The only possible problem is the router does management on a per-user level. One solution would be to have 3 routers in total, one for you, one for the neighbour, and one to do the routing and traffic management. The traffic management one (main router) would be connected directly to the ADSL line, and then each of the other two would be connected to the main one. Then each household connects through their own router to main one and subsequently to the internet.

Depending on the ADSL router you can set up QOS to guarantee any IP priority. You can give your PC 2meg guaranteed and leave the rest open. That way if you aren't using, they get a full 4 meg and if they aren't using you get 4meg. If you are both using you each get 2meg.

Get a Mikrotik and two wireless access points, you will then be able to split the BW 50:50 between your neighbors and yourself. You can set it up so that you both can burst to 4Mb if one party isn't using their BW
