So if reliability and peace of mind is on the top of your priority list, go for Toyota

I personally wouldn't recommend this vehicle.
Firstly, it doesn't perform as well in the euro NCAP crash rating like the other vehicles mentioned here (4 stars)

It uses a lowered powered version of the mazda 2.0 engine (CX-5, MX-5 and 3 all use the higher powered ones)

Its based off the Mazda 2 platform - so you're essentially getting a mazda 2 with a higher centre of gravity. Also it is quite cramped inside.

3-year warranty and service plan may be off putting to some.

You are absolutely correct about hijacking - Toyota, VW and Ford are quite risky - but usually these stats are based on number of vehicles stolen in a given period. But as we know, these brands dominate the sales charts.

So I'd actually like to see a ratio of number of vehicles on the road vs number hijacked - that would draw a much better picture on the riskiness of these vehicles.

In as much as I would like to have a Toyota given its reputation, I get uncomfortable with the hijack risk surrounding it. I personally know four (4) close associates whose Toyota vehicles were stolen.That alone blurs my sense of critical appraisal of the stats.

then you have to look at the next tier of vehicles, that aren't as high risk.

Suzuki, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan.

and then the Frenchies, that have their own problems,
especially with parts availability, and reliability in our challenging conditions.

Peugeot, Citroen, Renault,

As an owner of one I can't disagree..... Just make sure it's a 2015 and up model if you want bluetooth music streaming natively with the car.

I did 1100kms or so in one day from DBN to plett... Got out the car and was 100s... No stiffness or anything.
