Hi,

My sister has a domain name registered with Telkom, which is also used for business e-mail. The problem is that when she is not connected to the Telkom network (f.e. she's on a mobile connection, or on vacation, etc.) sending an e-mail to certain recipients will result in bounces due to the current SPF record.

Telkom does not require/support SMTP authentication either. What is the best way to solve this problem?

1. Remove the SPF record or add additional rules for each network that she wishes to use. Are there any security implications here?
2. Move to another ISP that supports SMTP authentication.
3. Other?

Thanks.

Option number 2.

Moving to a host that supports SMTP authentication will mean that you can send mail from any network without current issues. Worst case you can access the webmail functionality and send mail from there if the current network for whatever reason does not want you to send mail..

Okay, I will discuss this with her. I had already mentioned a move for other reasons.

Thanks.

Move the mail to Google Apps. Simple, cheap, effective.

under advanced options tick outgoing uses the same server as incoming.
Telkom doesn't support SMTP authentication, as far as I understand it. This is from them:

Please note that the Telkom outgoing mail server does not require authentication. Please make sure that you remove the tick for “my outgoing sever requires authentication” option and the SMTP port should be 25.

Thanks, I'll mention it to her, but a Bronze Home package from Afrihost is just R9/month.
True, but the additional benefits you get with Google Apps are enormous in comparison. Storage capacity, etc

I use the combination of Afrihost Bronze and Google Apps in many domains.

I would stay far far away from Afrihost when it comes to any type of hosting (including email). Rather move to Google Apps as it's been pointed out

Ditto.

I have a hosted cPanel server for clients in Afrihost and even that's horrible. They have network issues that I ask for support on and nobody seems to be able or willing to assist. They simply turn around with a response like "we don't provide support for the software on your server".

Have since moved all my work and personal email to Google Apps for biz.

Afrihost don't support authenticated SMTP either, so she's probably going to move to Web Africa.
