I'm buying now. While a speed bump is pretty likely in the near future I'm not overly concerned.

Then again it depends on what you want to do with it. I was planning on waiting until Adobe releases its pro apps but my boss is getting pretty insistent.

hehehe. basically here's the story. im going to Vega Brand communications school here in sandton. while each student does get their own imac to work on AT school, i've been told that it serves as a huge advantage to have your own PORTABLE mac. i am going to be doing multimedia design and web design. during my 4year course i want to do some freelance work and im sure a powerbook will come in handy with that :)
so you are suggesting i buy now? i've been told that macs dont seem to go out of date as quick as PC's would, in terms of the applications i would like to run on my Mac

I'm still happily using my G4 powerbook so I'm personally not in a hurry to upgrade but I wouldnt hesitate if I did need a new one. The new MacBooks and MacBook Pro's are pretty sweet.

In my experience the hardware does have a good life-span.

If you get a new core 2 duo model macbook or macbook pro with at least 2gb ram you won't need to upgrade for a long while. There aren't too many applications that will tax that processor to the full extent so your bottleneck is more likely to be ram.

If you are going to have access to an iMac at school the next two years or so, why not go for the 24" iMac + a 2.5" external HDD? Its much simpler to carry around the HDD in your pocket than worrying about someone liberating your MBP from a classroom.

Sure - but then you're limiting yourself to being able to work/study/play at two locations. Why not a MB/MBP at home and a large memory stick?

Since its going to be used for design, I thought the extra screen real-estate would be nice. But a 23" LCD would probably work just as well.

I've got my money on the iMac being revved before the MBP's in the next couple of months - I agree that a speed bump is in order. Seems that major Mac releases are either in January at MacWorld or in October after WWDC. But his Steveness has been sending signals that he may not stick to that schedule.
