Yes I know i'm already known as the guy that starts frivolous threads, but this is important.

I've never really been able to call my partners by pet/affectionate names like baby, sweetie, honey, cupcake, other confectionery items etc. I just feel so dumb saying things like that. The only one i might use is "darling" perhaps.

Are other guys like that too? Do you do it and what do you call your partner and what does your partner call you?

I work on a first name basis with everyone.

I feel odd calling someone that i'm involved with by their full first name, feels too formal. I usually make a nickname out of it but that's as far as I go.

So your nickname is your 'affectionate' name for them...

Oh god, no. I'd imagine myself in a porn movie immediately and burst out laughing if I did that.

Reminds me of a porn clip that I once saw where you'd swear the man and woman's roles were reversed. He was just so vocal.

Slightly OT, but should men make sounds during sex? I mean some grunting and groaning is okay I suppose but actual words???

Well I'm Afrikaans and the SO is English. I call her Liefie and vice versa. Don't like darling, babe, sweety.

I tried calling her "bok drolletjie" but it does not have the same "oomph" that it has got in English than Afrikaans. Some words just not sound right when translating them.

WTF? Buck feces?

Whenever I hear afrikaans people calling each other "skat" I think of scat! What's the obsession with Afrikaans people calling their loved ones feces??

yes, essentially. I can't use the default affectionate names.

I don't see why those are the accepted affectionate names, or why you think it's expected to use one of those.

Me neither, I'd feel like such an idiot if I did.

Me too. It just sounds so... false. Like you're pretending to be a couple on a sitcom.
