Has anyone here made any actual money via this?

Recently discovered one can set up a website on GCP for essentially no money so tempted to give this a try.

Any war stories / success / tips?

I tried everything to do with network marketing and just made the owners of the websites rich.

You would make more money by learning how to place adverts on the net and selling a product. The product can be cheap as $10 for instructions on how to make money online. You then send them instructions on how to place adverts as you did and sell the same information. Nobody would bother to ask for their $10 back as in foreign terms it is worth next to nothing but in SA it is R130.00.

hehe no different things. Affiliate marketing as in amazon affiliates, not multilevel marketing.

Made very little. But was for a very niche and largely cardless region (Malawi). Was making like $10 a month from books, and maybe $50 from hotel bookings. My website was on page 2 on Google at the time and was mostly focused on news. This was like in 2003. A lot has changed since then

That's actually pretty good. I've crunched the numbers and I need less than 1usd a month to break even so setting expectations low.

Used the XML api's for both Amazon and Travel websites.

The comms. on travel websites can be quite good nowadays. Only for payment do they get sent off-site. 3.5-7.5% can be earned. So a single hotel booking for 5 nights at $100 a night can earn you a years cost

Locally I use affiliate.co.za (affiliate link)

But if you have international audience Amazon Affiliates is crazy effective
Surely the audience doesn't matter...it's all global anyway. My rather SA focused website is getting hits from very strange places...peru and azerbajian for example.

But yeah...I'm aiming for amazon.

hmm...isn't travel completely saturated though?

I'm thinking more of setting up a string of niche websites that'll do ok-ish with my not so great SEO skills rather than trying to compete in a hyper competitive space.

The key is providing unique content.

So "My favourite hotels in CT", "My favourite places to go", with your personal reviews...and then affilate XML data pulled into your website with a "check availability" and "book on Expedia/Booking.com" can be very template based and painless to implement and replicated for different sites.

And as I said, the comms is good and you are essentially selling for the same price as the big boys. Flights are relatively pointless, as the comms are non existent to proper travel agents also
