Affinity apps currently free in AppStore

Confused it with Procreate for a second there, but still a win win either way.

They’re free, so I’ve downloaded them and will see how useful they end up being. At the normal price it’s almost US$60 of apps.

For sure. I’ve just had Procreate in my wishlist for a while between myself and my daughter wanting to draw more.

Good to have these on hand in case you want to do the odd hardcore edit and don’t have an Adobe CC sub.

I hope you all get it, since they publicly announced that all sales are seized. Though giving it away isn't a sale, either.

I got them for the sake of it. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to use Designer or Publisher on my Mini.

Pity I wasn't able to upgrade my MacOS version of Photo 2 because that trial has expired.

That’s the Mac and PC version…

And? All I am saying is that you all should hope that the $0 is honored. Where it was unintended, do not expect it to be promised. Regardless, it is still them having it available and listing it as $0. It has been like this since they suspended sales, and it has been almost 5 days now that the iPad version can be downloaded and purchased at that price.

The company has been quiet in 2025. All this is rather sudden. I think they are changing ownership. Though they have been acquired, they are only transitioning now. Well, this is what is being alleged within their social channels. I haven't looked into it.

This is for the iPad version. They stopped selling the PC version before this special happened, they are completely unrelated.

I own both the v1 and v2 suites. Yes, the products are related, but the iPad version is tailored toward tablet use and is limited.

2 days, according to the entirety of the tech press.

It has gone to $0 the moment they put up the "Creative Freedom Banner." Also the tech press:

All Affinity apps are now free for the iPad - for now

Ahead of a mysterious announcement on October 30 iPad versions of Affinity's suite of apps — Affinity Photo, Affinity Publisher, and Affinity Designer — have been made entirely free. We think you need to move quickly to get this, though.

After Serif, the publisher of the Affinity apps, was acquired by Canva in 2024, it launched an extended free trial of all of its apps, across iPad and Mac. But this new offer, exclusive to the iPad editions, looks to be permanent — or a mistake.

Affinity has been promoting a big announcement, now scheduled for October 30, and describes it as "true creative freedom." But there are as yet no further details, and there has been no formal announcement of the free iPad apps.

Not all good news

Canva bought Serif on March 26, 2024. It's mostly left the company alone, until recently.

Those recent moves are a little concerning, though. The Serif YouTube channel is closed, and so is the company's plug-in store

Furthermore, the forums are going read-only on October 6, and you can't buy a universal license any longer. The Affinity site has also dropped all references to the existing suite of apps, including any visible download option — but if you Google, you can find the links.

There's a big announcement teased for October 30. While this free offer isn't advertised, and could be a mistake, we're not certain what's happening on that day.

So, this one feels like an app you download to your device, and keep forever, perhaps, if you start using it. We've already seen delistings after acquisitions, so it's not clear if the downloads for version 2 from the App Store will still be available, lifetime license or no.

Mac versions being removed

As this news first broke, the Mac versions of the Affinity apps remained available on the Mac App Store in the US, but had been removed in the UK. They have now been taken down on the US site too.

If you are in a territory where the Mac apps are still available on the Mac App Store, they are at full price. There is no free Mac edition of any of the apps, but at present the iPad ones remain free.

Again, all I said is that I hope that you all are going to get it. It is possible that some apps will be retired. This is being openly discussed on their Discord and discussion board, but those who run it aren't being responsive.

People are speculating that the company is going through a transition phase.
