Up the creek without a GB
Hi All,

I am looking for a reliable alternative to ADSL that is affordable for usage of 2GB+. There needs to be fairly reasonable prices for additional usage should I go over the 2GB amount. My ADSL is pretty much shot, the most is stays up for is about 30 minutes (most times it is only up for 2 minutes at a time before being down for another 5 minutes). I run a internet based business from home and being without the internet is well suicide. I had to try connect 3 times just to get this message posted.

BTW: I have spoken to Telkom, they keep telling me they are working on a problem at the exchange but I have been having problems since the 7th Feb.

Thanks

Abe

The 7th of February in Telkom's terms are still acceptable. When you have waited three months, then you are screwed.

Best thing to do, is to keep nagging them at the call centre, and never, ever loose your reference number for your fault.

A week down is a big problem for me. With that kind of service, its looking more and more attractive to move the business off shore.

I have 5 of those already :) I spend so much time on the phone to them that I can't use my closer minutes.

I have the same issue. Are you on the Sunninghill Park 3 exchange? It's the most fustrating thing! I have logged 3 calls without any resolution. Quite frankly I don't even think they acknowledge the problem, that or don't understand the root cause

Maybe consider the new MTM 3G package

Yes, I am linked to the Sunninghill Exchange. I have just spoken to someone who knows what the problem is. There are 172 people including businesses that are effected. There is a problem with the ATM which is connected to the DSLAM. He says that they don't want to replace the ATM because that will bring everyone down for a time. My guess is that is a crock and it is the cost of replacement that they are balking at.

The MTN deal looks good but if you want to go over your usage, they screw you with extra costs. Every once in a while I need to download a patch (400Meg) or update a Linux distribution (2GB+). On ADSL, those extra 2GBs cost me R140. With MTN, the extra 2GB costs R2K.

On the plus side. He said that we must ask for a credit and we will get a refund for every day that it is down.

FireFLi and Abe

I'm experiencing the exact same issue here.. so my questions to you are:

1. Who can i talk to at Telkom to maybe, hopefully try and get a refund
2. What are you doing in the meantime to stay connected ?

Accounts, but the catch is that you can only get a refund when the problem is resolved. I have a feeling that the problem is much more widespread then they told me on the phone. I am sure there are a number of people that are having problems and Telkom are not telling them what it actually is.

Virgin mobile and Saix dial up. Both are costing an arm and a leg however which is why I posted this message. There does not seem to be a high usage alternative to ADSL and Telkom know it. I am now desparately waiting for Neotel to see if they can at least come up with something.

gotta love it

Yup. Doesnt really help me having to download 3 x 80mb files !

I've resorted to using a combo of iBurst and Vodacom 3G... kching kching !!!

At the moment I am not looking at any alternatives as my adsl is shared amongst the HOA so it's not up to me, alone, to make the decision.

I have no idea what the problem is, it seems to be intermittent and comes and goes every couple of days. I logged a complaint on hellopeter and I am waiting to see what the response from telkom will be. This is the third time I have logged a call w.r.t issue and I have not received a response to date as what the problem is. And have been met with great indifference (no surprise there).

I know they had major issues last week because I also lost my telephone line . I was thinking maybe they are upgrading exchange, wishful thinking, for an ADSL2+ trial.

Anyway had iburst previously so the aerial is still mounted on the wall, worst comes to the worst I will go back to them, not ideal for gaming though.

Anyone know where the actual exchange is located? Would like to go camp outside and grab a techie to find out the real problem

Update: Friday night 20:40 git a call from telkom representative and she confirmed that several ATM's are indeed buggered. and assured me they where working on it as a matter of urgency.

Well you can always put an ad in the paper like the guy in the eastern cape did. R 25 000 got the problem sorted out in no time!
