Once we get to 12 hours X days X months/years we're stuffed in any case. The infrastructure to support being off the grid would not even have support any more.

We also have a gas stove.
But I had to have a conversation with my wife and explain nicely that I would not be spending money on generators/anything else just so that they can sit and watch TV during load shedding.
Oppertunity for family bonding?

Got my rig set up. Went with 2x 105ah AGM Deep cycle batteries from my local supplier. Connected in series to a 1.1kva APC 24v UPS. Can so far confirm that it is working quite good. Had the tv running and switched the plug off. Tv didn't even dim and kept playing. I have a 43" LED 4K tv connected to it along with a sound bar with sub, decoder and my fibre router. Will test how long it can run off the batteries only and post it here for those interrested... View attachment 639696

Hows the recharge performance from the UPS? Wont it get insanely hot charging those batteries? Doesnt look like there is a lot of space for airflow there.

Didn't have to recharge yet. Will switch off at the wall plug today and when almost depleted have it charge up again and report back on the heat. It is open behind and in front of the setup and the AGM batteries is made for use in unventilated spaces but not sure about the UPS fan. Seems to only come on when on battery power and switch off when main power returns

Yip look into this ASAP, cos if your charger is slow (less than 20A) you will experience problems when they do power cuts more than once a day especially if your batteries are discharged quite a bit.

Generally those UPS systems are built with small batteries so the charger could be small. Keep an eye on this. Could affect battery health.

Thats an excellent point... if its a 10A charger, its pretty much going to take a full day to recharge.

Hi, also mentioned in another thread re UPS and recharging. In Stage 4, I detected my run times started diminishing due to insufficient recharge time. Got my normal 10 amp car batt charger and hooked it up to each battery to speed up recharge time. (One at a time as the batt charger is only 12 volts)
But the answer is 1 x 275 Watt or higher Solar Panel, and 1 x 20 amp mppt 12/24 volt controller. That will recharge your batteries in 8 hours.

Getting an inverter soon, which batts ( 100-105ah ) Deep cycles would you recommend for a good price ? I'll get a better set batteries next year, for now it's to get through this year ( maybe two :p ) due to cash flow

Same advice as with the OP. Does the inverter have charging capability as well? Again doesn't make much sense to go cheaply as you'll just be adding costs in the long run. You didn't mention budget but really if you can fork out R20k plus an inverter and a panel or two you're cash flow will get a lot better in the long run.

Why are you posting here as well. People have given you plenty of advice in other threads, which you seem to be ignoring.

You cant recommend a company but say "they seem ok " , its either good or bad.
