Affordable VR for an 8-year-old

Hey peeps,

I took my daughter to rage this year, and she fell in love with VR... so much so, that she is no longer buying a dog.

She saved up R3k thus far for a VR set but i know this is not even close to enough.

What options do i have? I am willing to match what she saved, giving us around R6k for a VR set. I'll cough up a bit more if it makes a big difference in quality.

I would really appreciate some tips here. I am a noob when it comes to VR.

You want a standalone or one that requires a cellphone

Takealot has the standalone PlayStation VR headset for R6000. Check this out on takealot, http://takealot.com/og/v1/PLID46906820

They also have some decent ones that require a cellphone that's way below R2000,you will also be able to get a dog

How'd she save up R3k? Little girl has a job already? Well done to her. We need more kids in the workforce.
 
Isn't she too young for VR? Like wouldn't it mess with her eyes?


Now I sound like my parents when I was younger :o

In all seriousness, dumping R6k on a toy is just silly. Buy a Cardboard and once the VR fad fades, you'll be happy.

Stuff like the Oculus Rift and Playstation VR have a recommend age of 13+ but no one really knows.

Damn, you're hard to please. I was agreeing with you.

You can buy a cheap android phone , and use it for prank calls later.

I have been keeping my eye on the VR market as it has change a lot over recent times. Your options are as follows:

1) Playstation VR (Does require a PS4 and PSVR specific games).
2) Oculus rift - Really expensive for an 8 year old.
3) VR Heaset with mobile phone setup (I use this personally as it is really inexpensive and with a decent device, the effect is amazing with Free Android Apps). I personally got one with built in headphones so it is easier to work. Might have been better with a wireless mouse and I still need to test my new phone (2k screen) to see the quality difference. Do remember, that the resolution for your screen is 50% of horizontal pixels. So a screen that is 1920x1080, is 960x1080 per eye when in a VR device.

The Oculus Rift and PS VR are amazing technologies. The Oculus connects to your PC and you can play many games and stuff using it. But not so simple to setup. Lots of choices.

The phone version , all you do is slot the phone into the holder and you have vr, lots of free apps available, Google also has vr storytelling appvand YouTube has alot if 360 degree video's.

Don't get those R200 one they don't work properly, get something decent maybe R500-R1000 range
