Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was recently quoted as saying that African’s should travel to the moon to investigate what more developed nations have been doing in outer space.
While addressing the Ugandan Law Society in Entebbe he added that, “”We must also go there and say: ‘what are you people doing up here?’.”
Museveni took special care to urge the assembly to support East African integration, citing that one of the regions goals should be to develop a space programme to rival the likes of America and China. He was also quoted as saying that, “The Americans have gone to the moon. And the Russians. The Chinese and Indians will go there soon. Africans are the only ones who are stuck here.”
The Ugandan President has long been campaigning for a common East African economic and political zone and has even suggested that the region become one country.
The idea of Africa joining the space race (albeit forty years late) and becoming involved with projects such as the international space station sound plausible but is it worth the time and money to aim for the moon?
Apparently Museveni isn’t aware that the last time a man set foot on the moon, was in 1972 with the Apollo 17 mission. Since then there has been a protracted and often limited interest in lunar exploits.
If rumours are to be believed the US is no longer able to land on the moon as they no longer have a working Saturn 5, the lander that enabled man to walk on the moon in the first place.
Perhaps East Africa should focus on alleviating grinding poverty and improving terrestrial telecommunications before it turns its attention towards outer space.
