You may find it funny but this is nothing less than criminal

No shortage of cyberthugs from countries like Romania, Russia and Turkey trying to hack websites and ruin other peoples hard work.

The cracker jerk who did this deserves jailtime + should reimburse the website for therir financial loss. That probably won't happen but one can only hope karma is a bitch.

How secure was the server that was hacked?. I dare say it probably wasn't very secure, it's like people who don't have an antivirus, and then want to blame the virus writers when they get infected, or leaving your keys in your car and then act surprised when it's stolen.

Hackers/crackers don't need an insecure servers. Things like SQLi vunerabilities and LFIs will do the trick.

And yes, web admins should take precautions by installing things like firewalls. But a criminal act is a criminal act. Or do you disagree?

So it has been 5 1/2 hours now (from OP) and nothing has been done to the site? If it had such a financial impact, surely they would have done something by now.

Anyway, it seems to be only the landing page that is affected. Some pages on the site is still working.

Looks like they have been using Joomla. My guess is that they did not load any of Joomla's security patches allowing easy access through some vulnerability.

I don't deny the fact that the act is criminal, or condone it, btw.

See the page is up again, and the are part of the "Telkom South Africa Group", according to the info. in the footer.....
