Afrihost 3G vs LTE

I sent a request through to Afrihost to provision my sim card for LTE and received this response:

Thank you for your mail,
Please be advised that you request unfortunately cannot be done as the device you have,
is not an LTE device but a 3G device ,but if you want to still enable the Sim to LTE,
it will not work in your device.

Now I have no problem understanding that my mifi device is 3G and not LTE and as such won't work at LTE speeds, however surely an LTE enabled SIM should be able to work in a 3G device. Am I just being confused?

Why do I want to provision it for LTE you may ask, well we got a LTE modem into the office and I'd like to check speed/signal here, but not at the cost of never having my mifi device work with the SIM.
