So my mate, calls my up and wants to know how to do some torrenting. I explain it + give him peerblock.

A day later he recieves this mail from one download? What is the deal with this? I know people clocking 100 - 200GB on torrents and not one single email. Isnt this abit ridiculous?

should have let peerblock update before starting to torrent?

lol, does afrihost actually have a form you have to fill in to explain why you downloaded what you downloaded, which is none of their business.

-10 points for afrihost

... I wont comment on your comment regarding peerblock.

But yes, I agree with you regarding this. I mean he doesnt download anything at all, as soon as he touches one torrent he gets this?

Do we live in China?

illegal is illegal no matter how many times you do it. 1 time is enough.

Lay charges with the police against Afrihost. It is highly illegal for them to do packet inspection without a court order.

They didn't do packet inspection... the copyright holder was monitoring the torrent peers, logged the IP address... forwarded it to IS, who gave it to Afrihost. This happens soooo often.

Plumb outta luck if he picks the 1 monitored torrent haha

So you guys blame Afrihost for him downloading something illegal? You guys serious?

It's like bitching about mall security catching you when you're shoplifting - If you don't want to get 'caught out' for doing illegal stuff - don't do it.

This happened to me with my old Afrihost account.

What I would like to know is do IS/Afrihost really have any right to block an account for torrenting? If Columbia Pictures or whoever in the States make a note of it being a pirate movie what juristiction do they have here? Secondly a torrent comes from multiple sources, which can be in multiple countries. Lastly don't they have to go after the seeder and not the sownloading party?

I am not condoning downloading illegal content, but I don't think that cutting access due to a letter from a foreign company due to rights in that country are valid. If this was so we wouldn't have problems with malware sites and SPAM surely.

Lastly when will the movie companies wake up and get rid of the territory-based licensing? I mean seriously guys, wake up!! Why not look at a hits-based model for charging (per view basically)- this will allow for more Netflix style content delivery which should actually lead to more revenue, not less.

Reply to Afrihost's mail by telling them you're gonna fix the problem by cancelling and going to another ISP. Only way they will learn.

Didn`t say he did the right thing, but 2 wrongs don`t make a right.
Playing policeman is not afrihost`s job, its like telkom phoning you saying you shouldn`t swear in your private conversations with other people.

Oh jeez /facepalm! Don't you guys understand that Afrihost DOES NOT monitor the frigging traffic? I.S. gets notified from abroad and therefore NOTIFIES Afrihost! Where does this leave Afrihost "in the wrong"?

Man there are some seriously stupid people in the world.

Here is the deal: Some nice people overseas noticed that your mate was either uploading (most likely scenario) or downloading a certain file. They presumed that their jurisdiction was valid in South Africa. It is not valid, yet. They sent the email to Internet Solutions, because they own the block of IP's that your mate was assigned. IS sent the e-mail to Afrihost because they gave Afrihost some IPs, Afrihost knows your mates IP address and e-mailed him.

Afrihost (and all other ISP's in SA) have a clause in thier AUP about copyrighted content. They are obliged to send the e-mail and 'scare' people away from using the bandwidth.

Whats the lesson? Well, update PeerBlock more regularly. If you must use torrents try using a private tracker or at the very least severely limit your upload speed on public trackers like PirateBay. Rather ditch the torrents though, try get to grips with SABnzbd, SickBeard and NNTP... you won't regret it once its up and running.

And what to tell Afrihost? Tell 'em you've given the content back by uploading it all back and you deleted it after you were sure it was the right file. Or, just say, "bummer, i'll say 10 hail mary's".

I know, and all they have to do is forward the e-mail to you. Not request you to go fill in a form explaining yourself.

This is what I have a problem with

Not much you can do about this. Say sorry and tell them you have "fixed" the problem, or move to another ISP. I used to get notices a LOT... about 4 per month... about two years ago, from another ISP I do torrents with. Eventually I got peerblock as well and it killed 99.9% of the messages, and I do between 300 and 500GB per month of torrents only. In fact this account/line is doing torrents 24/7 and never does anything else... for 2 years now. I received one warning message in the past year, and I was told they were going to cut me off if I didn't do something about it. I said nothing and they never did anything. I guess lucky as I know others on this forum who have been suspended. Though really, I would just move to another ISP if it is a problem.

The problem is you need to make a point. If they start losing clients because of these mails they will stop sending them.

I never got any mails from Afrihost, plus they shaped me when I reached 40GB. They have great speeds but are strict as hell when it comes to dowloading
