Here is some honest (and at times sarcastic) feedback with Afrihost's Airmobile, and also dealings with Rain.
I am located in Cape Town, and even areas such as Simonstown suffers from poor rain signal, the constant load shedding makes the situation a millions worse - as then I can't use Wifi Hotspots either so am forced to depend on non existent signal in some areas. Also had non stop connectivity issues in the Milnerton/Brooklyn area - Rain's advise was to move to a router, and not use my phone, as these are better optimized. However I have had no rain issues in Rondebosch. Only time the signal went down was after 4 hours of loadshedding.
I decided to hunt for another provider which offers uncapped mobile data at an affordable rate.
I posted an article here several months back, and I suggest Airmobile via Afrihost which runs via MTN. Which to my knowledge has the best coverage in South Africa. So for R497 a month for nationwide coverage, vs R499 for something which essentially becomes useless (except for battery draining) as soon as a person sets one foot out of Fish Hoek.
Giving Afrihost's airmobile a try was a no brainer for me.
Despite speeds being reduced at 100gb usage (which I'm not certain I will ever get to) Should I ever use 200gb and land up at 2mb it's not the end of the world.
So as soon as I found out about Airmobile, I canceled Rain. I was advised the end of November would be my last time billed for.
I sat out my notice period, but just as precautionary measure - Earlier in the week - I decided to visit my bank, and have my online shopping limit reduced so that should Rain attempt to debt me, it would be stopped, and the charge declined. I also bought a MTN simcard the same day.
Linking Afrihost's AP to the simcard proved to be a bit of a challenge, as MTN rejected the provisioning request, however after dealing with Afrihost support - Afrigirl has been fantastic here. I was up and running about 5 hours later.
Not only are the speeds fast. I have rock solid coverage in areas in which Rain had none.
Last but not least - despite the end of November being the last date for Rain to bill me. I have had several SMSses from my bank that Rain has attempted to debit me for R499 - but that charge has been declined. It seems to be at least once a day.
They won't be getting another cent from me!
