I have shared hosting with a mail server that goes: mail.cybaspace.co.za

I use this for both incoming and outgoing mail. It has a username and password (outgoing requires authentication). It worked fine until today, when the outgoing mail server does not connect on Afrihost, but connects on my old WebAfrica prepaid account.

Why is this? What has changed?

I now have to resort to smtp.isdsl.net for Afrihost and back to smtp.saix.net when my Telkom account is active (usually first half of month). With the cybaspace server, it didn't matter. It always (until now) connected irrespective of Afrihost or Telkom.

Anyone know why?

Youre lucky, happened to me a few weeks back and never fixed itself, Afrihost had no answer for me and it "wasnt considered a problem" just use smtp.afrihost.co.za for sending.

There's the thread on PC Format explaining my issues with this. Afrihost still haven't gotten back to me, but my web host sorted me out to get around it. In my instance I had to use mail.[mydomain].co.za and set the outgoing server to port 26 (rather than port 25) and it works fine.

Interesting to see that you have the same problem too though. I'm going to link the techie that I dealt with to this thread and see what he has to say.

You can also use the Gmail smtp server if you have a Gmail account. That still works fine on my side. You just have to follow the setup process from the Gmail website for your particular mail program.

Also had the same issue - it was resolved by changing the outgoing port to 26.

I don't know why people set it up on port 26. It is supposed to be on port 587 according to the standards. :-)

Don't know much about ports but it seems to be that port 26 is the Outlook default.

Microsoft products generally do not follow any industry-wide standards (see post by ambo), maybe this is part of the problem, if not the actual cause.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the help, but Port 26 doesn't work. It's going to be a pain in the butt switching mail accounts each time my adsl account is switched.

Do you want to tell me IS decided to block port 25 connections out of their network if it originates from a adsl IP ?

I'm on IS and I can telnet to that smtp server on port 25 with no issues:

220-XXX.ampledns.com ESMTP Exim 4.69 #1 Thu, 28 Jan 2010 09:07:50 +0200
220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited,
220 and/or bulk e-mail.

I can telnet to smtp.afrihost.co.za just fine on port 25, but when I try to smtp.webafrica.org.za I get the following:

Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed

Tracert and ping the address on the afrihost acc, post logs here

No of course not but they do block the other way. If a packet is received on their network destined for their SMTP server and DOESN'T originate from within the network, this packet is dropped.

Are you sure this is the correct server address?

I would rather use smtp.webafrica.co.za
