Afrihost applies one-way carry over

Maybe I'm just being pedantic but I feel that Afrihost applies an unfair roll-over on thier ADSL package. I have a 5Gb package and made use of their generous buy-one-get-one-free offer. I left my machine on overnight when I still had some bandwidth left, the next morning I saw that my account was capped and that I went over my allocation by 121mb which will bet deducted from my next months allocation on my next top-up. However if I use ony some of my bandwidth, it's gone by the end of the month.
 
Welcome to the real world. ISPs aren't doing this because they're your buddies ;)
 
Theft and criminals. That's what the telecoms industry and their operators are in this country. Just plain corporate thievery. Designed and implemented by Telkom first!
 
same thing happened to me..
was downloading torrents and thought that a hard cap will apply and my download would be stopped but when i went to check, i was capped but i was allowed to overshoot my limit by 760 MB!!
called afrihost and told nothing could be done cos they got their updates from IS only every 30 mins.
that 760 was taken from my next top up.
 
Whats the issue with this model. If you use the bandwidth you pay for it, its not like you being charged for something and not getting it. Whats the difference if you pay for it this month or next month. Unless I am missing something here, i dont see a problem?

And if I pay for the bandwidth, I want to use it. I don't want it to disappear at the end of the month if I didn't use it.

That is the main problem, as the OP stated, go over and it gets deducted from next month, go under and you lose it :mad:

Ahhh, OK point taken - I misunderstood (since I always overuse :D) , I thought the only issue raised was the deduction of the overuse on the following months' cap. I agree - overuse and you should pay for it, under use and you should still keep it for the next month at least.
 
OMW, Afrihost are certainly kept on the First Page on MyBB, and rpm has nothing to do with it.

Afrihost's data usage policy has always been like this, and if you actually READ their policy, or the many threads on this forum, you would know this.

I would rather not lose any unused bandwidth at the end of the month, BUT as timgaul said, they ain't doing this to be your buddy. I went over in October when I downloaded the latest Ubuntu distribution, purchased extra Gigs, then wanted to cry when Afrihost introduced their 2-for-1 special, but I didn't create a thread on a forum complaining about. I believe the French would say C'est la vie.

.............the difference is they all don't sell Gigs at R29 or at R14,50 a GB like afrihost does.
 
Afrihost is pretty much selling bandwidth at (or below) cost... hoping for client to use less than they purchase.

So 700+MB (0.7 * 29 = R20.3) is alot of money to lose on a client you haven't made any money from in the first place.

As long as they offer it, I will gladly take it, maak nie saak waar dit vandaan kom nie en hoeveel wie op die aanbieding verloor nie. Allround thanx to Afrihost for offering this prices
 
I was just very iritated when I started the thread, all in all I'm very happy with Afrihost. I only landed up with them by accident - I used to think I was happy with my Telkom 3gig account, then Screamer came along and I jumped ship. For the whole month that I had Screamer I think I managed to stay online for only a few hours and had to revert back to a pay-as-you-go to at least get my e-mails. I discoverd Afrihost and I am very happy with them - especially when they have a sale. My frustration is more with the industry (cell phones included - don't get me started) as a whole. I've been around telkoms for many years and I certainly don't miss dial-up modems, x25 lines, diginet, Beltel, Compuservel and all the preceeding tecnologies that we thought were great at the time. It does frustrate me though when you compare us to other countries to see how we are being screwed and told to be happy about it.
 
Most ISPs build the going over into their margin. So if you go over by 100 MB or so they covered it. But because we are charging so little, this can't be worked into the offering otherwise it would not be finanically viable to sustain this product and would need to can it. And also in essence we are only charging for what you use.

Hope this explains our motives.

Fixed Cap accounts come in 1,2,3,5,10,20 and 30 GB increments.

All fixed cap accounts are hard capped and once your bandwidth quota is reached you are unable to access the internet.

To make sure this doesn't happen you can check your monthly usage at any time in your Afrihost Client Zone and if you need more bandwidth you can easily top up via credit card or debit order. Your monthly bandwidth in these packages are available to be used from the 1st to the last day of each month. Any unused traffic does not carry over into the next month.

So you cannot be charged for over usage - as its their responsibility to HARD CAP you once you reached your purchased limit... Then its your prerogative to top-up or not.

If they are acting outside of this written agreement , they are actually in breach of contract.

Would I have an issue with that - you bet I will.

Dudes,

There is no contract? it's month to month? You have to give a months notice, so this covers your overusage. And in any case, one school will bitch about NOT being hard capped, the other school will bitch about BEING hard capped. These guys are doing us a huge favour, helping US benefit from pressure they are creating, not to mention the low cost. R29? You don't get charged for it, it comes out of your next month's usage.
