Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Morning Guys!

I've gone through most of the Thread, and it looks like most of the queries are regarding NNTP / P2P downloads being much slower than they should have been. My own speeds definitely weren't the best, but then again my other ISP test accounts weren't much better.

I don't think it was a capacity issue to be honest, as we generally have enough bandwidth in the North over weekends, our monitoring was on the fritz as well, which I think was a contributor, as soon as I have news I will share.

Same thing my side except my downloads are being shaped from 6-11PM while all other services like streaming, web browsing etc remain fine.

Afrihost why is this?

Morning!

I don't think we were shaping any services over the weekend, but the general experience should have been more consistent, I'm checking if we had any issues over the weekend.

Sorry last night nntp was 54 kb/s speed look at my post

Our Team should definitely have been able to give you a better answer than "Test again."

From my side, I will follow-up on your Ticket, and find out exactly what we've done or not done on your account, and then what the next step will be to get your account running as should be.

Just checked and again getting exactly 0 KB/s on usenet - this goes for paid and free servers.

My setup is still scheduled to only download between 12pm and 7am from my uncapped days, so to me not the end of the world, however, when I want something outside of those hours, surely my expectation to be able to do so on capped "unshaped" data is not unrealistic or is it?

Capped accounts remain unshaped at all times. I've gotten a few other Users reporting reduced throughput on their Usenet downloads. Are you seeing any issues with your HTTP downloads and P2P torrents?

Almost never use torrents, will have to install a torrent client first - maybe that will count as an HTTP download then ;)

Jokes aside - Android and iOS updates coming through as usual. YouTube and HTTP seem to be fine.

Haha, downloading the Torrent Client would actually count as a test! :P

This is the AH callcentre response to the slow NNTP issue (which I described on this thread on Fri)...

As a recap for the AfriPeeps monitoring this thread.
1. Logged the call on Friday, 10th April at 16h18.
2. Promised that I will receive feedback before EOD Friday, 10th April.
3. No feedback until Sunday, 12th April at 04h22 when I received this...

Hope you are well this evening

I had a look at your account and line with us and did and admin reset on the data hosted with us
and refreshed the port software where your line connects at the exchange.
Please restart the router and keep it off for at least 5 min. The 5 min power down will
make your router drop the current IP address assigned to it and accept a new IP as soon
as it powers back on.

Please test the connection for 24 to 48 hours and if the condition didn't improve, please get in touch with me so that
we can issue a tech to and possible order a cable inspection as well if it is needed

Have a great day and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Warm regards

HUH!!!?! Seriously? How's that supposed to resolve or explain the NNTP issues?
- The call logged was titled "Problem with news.afrihost.co.za" and not "I am having general issues".
- The call logged the following issue "Per discussion with the consultant I'm experiencing timeouts on almost all threads when connecting to news.afrihost.co.za. The online chat service also timesout."
- The call showed two traceroutes as was requested by the consultant and which I posted here.
- I asked specifically (on the telephone engagement) for them to look into whether this was as a result of the current constraints on the network.

Anyway... Arrrggggggggggggggggggg...
I have an intense distaste when I take the time to explain and get a "CTRL+ALT+DELETE" (sm) response

I feel better now that I've had a rant.

I have been having issues with P2P torrents since Wednesday last week on my capped account and it has been at different times of the day not just peak hours. Normal browsing is fine but torrent downloads are going between 10kbps to 50 kbps or they start off slowly and eventually go above 300kbps after 5 to 10 minutes, I have a 4mbps line. When I test it using my Telkom data account the downloads go from 0 to nearly 400kbps in a matter of seconds. I'm also noticing that the Afrihost capped account has been very unstable when it does go to full speeds and often keeps going up and down between 100kbps and 300kbps. This is becoming very irritating now, I have never had problems with Afrihost like this until this last week.

The reason I got a capped account was because I was promised that the capped accounts are not shaped! I certainly feel like I am being shaped!

There should definitely not be shaping in affect on our Capped accounts, but something does appear to be off with NNTP downloads. Are the downloads coming from the Afrihost News Server slow? Or is it all of your downloads in general?

Our Capped accounts are definitely not shaped, so it is worrisome to hear about the intermittent performance of the connection.

When the P2P downloads slow down,do you notice any increases in latency at all? Have any other services been acting up?

How do I check the latency? There are no problems with any other services and as I said before when I switch over to the Telkom account the download goes at full speed with no problems.

P2P Test - buzzing along happily at 400-600 kB/s at the moment.

NNTP - 0 KB/s - this is on news.afrihost.co.za and paid server concurrently.

In my case - all (free and paid) servers are not only slow, they are floored, dead, oubrood, 0KB/s.

...and that's certainly why it appears/feels like shaping, as both ports 119 and SSL 443 cannot co-incidentally be out of order at the same time?
