Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

Shaping wouldn't affect your speedtests though. :(

How was your streaming performing?
YouTube wouldn't even load CSS. Capped Telkom account was perfectly fine for absolutely everything.

"Real-time" services like web browsing and YouTube are back to normal now.

Torrents running at about 100B/s this morning. Is the network really at that high a load?

Yep, same here.

My gaming experience has taken a huge drop, due to constant disconnects and huge lag spikes .... in a PvP situation, I am dead long before I even see the enemy

Torrents are also running at 1/3 of the speed it should (no difference if I swap the file order around - just in case it is a problem/restriction on the seed).

Speed test shows up OK, but Ping test, reveals constant packet loss on hop #8 (10Mb/s line)

:(

Those traceroutes and speedtests look pretty good. Packet loss on traceroutes isn't always accurate as some parts of the network either de-prioritizes ICMP traffic or drops it entirely.

Which game are you seeing the poor performance in?

Perfect World Entertainment - Forsaken World (European Server - Illyfue)

Since upgrading to fiber, my internet performance was pretty stable (in game ping ranges between ~200 ms to ~500 ms and torrents were flying at max speed). For the past few days things went south (not sure why, but even when I was running my data on DSL, I noticed a decline in performance as we enter the end of the month and an improvement as the new month commences - I assumed that this cycle was either due to (a) AH "shaping" data to curb excessive data use for the month and or (b) capped account holders trying their utmost to use up all available data before it expires).

Quick question:

I have a 100Gb Unshaped Capped account for R199.

Where do I add the Plus+? To get 200Gb Unshaped Capped for R299?

That could have been the case with DSL, but Fibre doesn't use the same infrastructure unless you're with Openserve. In that case you use the same IPC but shaping shouldn't cause latency on gaming though. :(

You just need to go HERE to sign-up for Plus+. Once that's done you will go to the ClientZone, select Other Services, choose Plus+ and there you will choose Manage Benefits to setup the specific Benefits. :)

I am with Openserve - that why I can use my AH DSL data account on it :)

I am not sure if PWE's Forsaken World is on AH gaming list - not sure how your shaping policy handles games that is not via Steam, Blizzard, etc

I was hoping that switching to a fiber line will improve my month end experience, but it seems it does not. My only other option I am considering at this stage is to try a different ISP and see how their data performs on an Openserve fiber line - I don't want to, but is pointless if I have the same issues I had on DSL (as it kinda defeats the object of moving over to fiber).

I think it's worth checking what protocols the game in question is using. If their not unique and something our shaping software identifies as a non-realtime service, you might definitely be affected by shaping. Out of interest, have you compared your experience with an Unshaped Caped account?

Yes way back when AH started to shape capped accounts I was initially on an unshaped account (on a DSL line though).

Since I initially got fibre ~ 2 weeks ago, my initial experience was great - downloads were flying at max capacity, ping plotter showed no packet loss (except for the usual hop #2) and gaming was pretty stable (PWE is renowned for their poor server performance, so one do get accustomed ot the occasional lag fest). For the last 3-4 days, I have a major increase in lag, severe slow download speed and ping plotter shows a constant packet loss on hop #8 (altho the comment from AH is that this could possibly not be an issue/factor).

My question is thus this: Based on the image supplied, it would appear that I might not be able to use all my available data this month. If I elect to jump ship at the end of June, what will happen to the remaining data?

PS: I am only considering this option because if my problems are related to AH's shaping policy on capped accounts, I can get similar priced deals from the competition without this amount of shaping being applied.

@igor why don't you just pause the account?

Hi

Thanks for the input - tbh, I did not even consider this option (obviously it will help me in signing up somewhere else to test my internet experience and do comparisons).

Morning Guys!

There could be an issue in the South that's causing slow or intermittent connectivity for our DSL Clients, our Team is working with upstream providers to resolve it as quickly as possible. We've updated the Network Status page to reflect this.

Afrihost Capped Account - Cape Town East.

Speed test: Downstream 0.70Mbps Upstream 0.44Mbps

SNR Margin (0.1dB): 119 241

Attenuation (0.1dB): 360 230 <<- Is this average or HIGH - the line keeps dropping out - no matter how many times telkom resets the ports

The weird part is that Telkom does not see it so high from their side - but these stats are directly off the router

Output Power (0.1dBm): 175 126

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 6224 1112

Trying to play multiplayer games on Steam is virtually impossible with AH - they keep on kicking us off the server because of the LAG our connections cause in the game play from RSA.

I am in the north (Gauteng/East Rand area) any idea what could be causing my issues of late?

I'm not sure why modems display the line stats in that way, but the attenuation and SNR margin should read as 36 dB for attenuation and 11 dB for the SNR. As long as the attenuation is below 55 dB and the SNR is above 6 dB your connection should be stable. :(

Are they picking up the disconnections at all on their side?

:( That's not good at all! Which games are you seeing this happen in?
