Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

I am in the north (Gauteng/East Rand area) any idea what could be causing my issues of late?

Things are looking pretty good for the most part in the North. If you're not having a great experience then we definitely need to figure out what's going on.

I think we may need to ask our Critical Care Team to contact you, they can then work 1-on-1 with you to figure out what's going on!

Afrihost Capped Account - Cape Town East.

Speed test: Downstream 0.70Mbps Upstream 0.44Mbps

SNR Margin (0.1dB): 119 241

Attenuation (0.1dB): 360 230 <<- Is this average or HIGH - the line keeps dropping out - no matter how many times telkom resets the ports

The weird part is that Telkom does not see it so high from their side - but these stats are directly off the router

Output Power (0.1dBm): 175 126

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 6224 1112

Those 0.1 values are the signal multipliers. Take the amounts and multiply by that 0.1 multiplier. So 360dB x 0.1dB = 36dB.

:( That's not good at all! Which games are you seeing this happen in?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare, the ping to STEAM servers is usually around 120 to 140 - and that gets you kicked off their server because you create lag in the gameplay for others.

It looks like a break somewhere. :( The moment I have a better idea I'll let you guys know.

Noticed this in the Uncapped section ........ does this only apply to the Uncapped clients or are you saying that AH finally came to the conclusion that there is currently a problem on their network that affects not only the south?

Ah! Thought so! :D Thanks clarifying!

Right - so then the line is not the problem - and if its not an OpenServe problem - the problem has to be on Afrihost's side...as there's nothing wrong with the router itself .

Attenuation: 36dB 23dB

It still so bad - that you have to wait for images here on mybroadband to load - one after the other...

This hop has between 60%-70% packet loss 169.1.5.105 cpt-up1.ip.adsl.co.za

And packet loss is normally caused by network congestion. So that server is overloaded.

Any AH Reps online - would really like a reply to post #2147 - is there a general network problem or not?

Edit: Don't worry to reply - downloads are flying at 1 Mb/s again

Well it was a general issue affecting users in the South throughout the course of the day. It appears that there was physical damage to a fibre link at a point in our upstream network which affected users in the South. The delay was due to the fact that physical hardware had to be replaced.

Could you perhaps post a full trace and MTR for me to have a look at?

I am still confused tbh - For the past 4 days I noticed a drastic decline in my download speeds (from ~1Mb/s to barely 200Kb/s) and severe lag spikes and dc's whilst gaming. I posted a speedtest and a ping plotter results and was informed that it all looks good.

When I questioned if it could be the result of AH drastic shaping policy (that seems to kick in on month end and last about 2 days into the new month), I was firstly informed that gaming is not shaped and then yes, it might be that my gaming issues could be the result of a shaping policy.

The AH Reps finally stated that there seems to be an issue in the South, to which I replied I am in the North and are experiencing issues. Miraculously these issues resolved themselves sometime yesterday, as my game lag disappeared and my torrents were downloading at max speed again - so I am not sure what is going on, as I do not seem to get an honest reply.

In the past I was told that my problems is due to a congested exchange, hardware, etc. I stayed with AH and when the opportunity presented itself, I grabbed fiber when it became available in my area and procured a new router as well, just to discover that these issues are still here come month end.

Any suggestions what else I can do on my end to improve my internet experience?

internet speeds has gone down the crapper again since yesterday with slow browsing are we shaping again or is ah back to normal again with problems every second day

Wow OK so I'm gonna look for a new service provider, this shapping is kinda bad and not transparent at all since there is no way to see if shapping is being applied and no way to turbocharge a capped account either.I was told capped account will have less shaping yet the shapped cap account is just as bad. Switch to free 1gig account streaming from vidzi and other streaming sites work fine. So it's not my line

I was also wondering, shaping has got to a point where it seems extreme. Even YouTube seems to be throttled. During the day I can download a file via HTTP at line speed 1.8mb/s, come 6/7pm and I can not seem to get more than 100kb/s. Even Skype battles.

I can definitely assure you that the issue we experienced in the South last Friday did not affect any other part of our Network. We'll have to troubleshoot with you further in order to determine the cause of your issues.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had such a poor experience. :( Some of these sites do use P2P connections to stream which will be shaped by our policies. You're right that shaping should not be as severe on Shaped Capped, but we can't rule it out. Please let us know if you experience it again and we'll run some realtime tests on your account.

Youtube will not be affected by shaping. Please let us know if you experience poor Youtube performance again and we'll run it by our NOC Team.

This is weird then, because my issues arrived approximately 2 days before month end and lasted approximately two days after month end - and they were only visible on my AH data account, switching to ISPAfrika (I have 10GB data with them on the fibre line, all was normal).

I am not sure if it will be possible to troubleshoot intermittent issues like this? (as stated previously, they normally appear around month end).

On AH I could barely maintain a download speed of 200Kb/s, yet on ISPAfrika downloads were running full speed (refer post #2134 for AH speeds)
