I hope someone else can confirm?
When I had a cloud server with Afrihost I noticed the following.

No Access to Afrihost DNS Servers
196.7.7.7 & 196.7.8.9

No Access to MTN Business SMTP
smtp.mtnbusiness.co.za

No Access to MTN Google Cache
64.14.xxx.xxx

Is this normal? And what are the correct ones to used on the Afrihost Cloud Services? No one at support could answer me.

1. Why would you want to use the Afrihost DNS servers they are crap and doesn't resolve half the sites on the web ?
2. You are using the Afrihost network why should mtn work ? Just because they own shares in Afrihost doesnt mean you can suddenly cross utilize all their services. MTN smtp server are only available to people on the MTN network.
3. MTN google cache is only available to users on the MTN network.

1. Use the google DNS Servers

8.8.4.4
4.4.4.4
8.8.8.8 Google cache server

2. Use smtp.afrihost.com
3. Why would you even want to use this ?

But the cloud services are hosted on the MTN network? Using MTN assigned IP Addresses in a MTN Data Centre..... So in theory it should work no?

smtp.afrihost.com points to smtp.mtnbusiness.co.za from my end.

And Google DNS routes internationally from the cloud servers.

Trying out something from my end so I need to figure out if this is normal or a problem.

I can start by answering the SMTP question, our SMTP servers will generally only work on our ADSL and Mobile Data IP ranges, so it won't accept outgoing mail requests from your server. You should have a Mail Service such as EXIM installed and running on your server, and this will let you send and receive mail from the server itself.

We'll generally configure the DNS for you as our Data Center breaks out directly onto a Fibre Backbone.

Would you mind sending a PM with your Server Name or IP so that I can make sure we get you the correct settings.

Thanks, I cancelled it a while back as support could not answer my questions, and Google services were being routed internationally from the server not locally. I thought it would have at least had access to local Google Cache servers. I could get around the DNS and SMTP problem which was not my main concern. The Google issues were.

afrihost doesn't do server hosting anymore, they do adsl and 3G data now. so it's understandable (and very normal) for their hosting services to act like that, simply because they don't give a **** about that anymore. I'd suggest getting a host that focusses on selling hosting and nothing else

We definitely still offer web hosting, and we most certainly do care about our clients using the product as well as it's infrastructure.

So no word as to why the cloud servers have no access to the Google Local Cache? Maybe one of your support team members could test on one of Afrigost's own servers? I am sure you will notice all Google traffic is routed out to the U.S 173.XXX.XXX.XXX range instead of any local ranges such as 64.14.XXX.XXX

Could have fooled me AfriGuy (not really, I'm not fooled easily)

Sorry about the lack of feedback :( Did you PM AfriGenie with your server details?
Google services shouldn't be routed internationally, it should all run via local CDNs and caching services. Saying that though, running a ping or traceroute to a site may show international routing. That's normal though, and running a service like iftop will show content being pulled down from a local Google CDN/ cache.
