I have been trying to get an explanation from Afrihost for days now about my fibre data usage. I do not believe that I am using data as they say I am but the person I am communicating with in their support role just avoids my questions and changes tack constantly.

Could somebody please look at the attached graphic and explain it to me to see if I understand it correctly:

It show 3 sessions, in reverse order with the latest session first in the list, in other words on the top of the list.

The data usage for the session starting 15:31:07 was 5.993Gb while the later session, at 15:47:5 usage was 3.725 Mb.

The Afrihost support contact is trying to convince me that the data usage is cumulative and I can't understand that. If, so why would the download figure decrease over time? It would increase if it is cumulative. The only way to read it is that each session's usage is displayed next to it. Or am I reading it incorrectly?

One final question: Is it possible to establish length of sessions?

Thanks.

Just to explain what is happening in the graphic that you have posted. What it is showing is how much data you have used per session. I'm assuming that this is a fibre connection.

Now, this can be a little bit confusing and I have to apologise in advance as this hasn't been labelled correctly.

On our network we have different sessions for the different type of traffic that is travelling through our network at any given time, hence the 3 different sessions that sort of started around the same time.

Basically, if you had to add up all of the downloads and uploads, you should get to the total amount of data you have used for the month.

Thank you Afrinatic for your reply and for confirming my understanding.

Now that we agree on the interpretation of the graphic, I have other questions and can also ask my original question, so effectively avoided by Afihost support.

1. What does the last column "Last seen" mean? Seen by whom? And how do the dates differ? How is it that the oldest session has the latest "Last seen" time?

2. How can I tell the length of a session?

3. Why don't you show a session end time?

4. This is the first , as yet unanswered question I asked. I do not believe the usage figure. I do not believe that my data usage for the session starting 15:31:07 was 5.993Gb . This assumes that the session ended at 15:47:5.
I do not believe it because I did some research and established that Netflix, which I was using, uses between 3.5Gb and 7Gb per hour, depending on resolution and line speed. Let us assume optimum on both and a usage therefore of 7Gb per hour. How then it it possible to use 5.993 Gb in about 20 minutes? I am the only user and had no other device connected.

The support person - whose abilities were not up to scratch and blamed me for "not getting it"- actually told me that I shouldn't worry about it since I am on an uncapped package! Problem is that this data indicates that Afrihost's figures can not be relied on and could in theory end up with me being unnecessarily throttled.

Look forward to your input.

Hey clouduser

Just a few things I need to clarify. The session start section shows when the session started. The last seen section shows when the session ended. It is possible to have multiple sessions on the same account. The duration of the session can be estimated by looking at the session start field and the last seen section.

The 20 minutes session you were referring to was actually about 3-4 days long.
