Afrihost - Frequent Disconnects

Just to keep you Afriguys posted:

Telkom called me again today - they say they see nothing wrong with my line

I explained the issue to the tech and he says he will go back to the exchange and have another look and "try something else".....

EDIT : Telkom has resolved the call. Speeds seem ok. I'll monitor the stability.

How are things looking this morning?

It was fine this morning, but it disconnected while I was streaming at about 21:00 last night.

In a sheer act of desperation, I changed my router (went back to the router I was using a couple of months ago). I left home at around 9am this morning, so I'm not sure how its behaving since then.

Thanks for the follow-up though

If you get an feedback from the Telkom Tech please let me know.

I hope that the change in router makes a difference!

I hope the router makes a difference too. Not too confident as this is the router I was using when I first picked up the problem. Logically, it makes no sense to try it, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

I hope so for you too.

You can take some solace that it worked in my case last week. Had random disconnections after moving from 4 to 8Mb/s. CrystalWeb said they can see it's the router, and I argued with them that they couldn't see that.

Tried a backup non-wifi router anyway and it's been fine since. Turns out they could see it, somehow. But somehow I doubt Afrihost would be able to.

Got my new wifi router today.

Hope it works for you too. :)

Thanks Ho3n3r.....

Its been going for 12 hours now, which is the longest its stayed up in the past few months. I'm not popping the champagne yet though - this router was also disconnecting sporadically when I last used it about 2 months ago.

Edit - 21 hours uptime and counting

A new record:

Connection Time : 01 day,17 hour,06 min,07 sec

I think its safe to say that, even of not completely resolved, the connection is a LOT more stable. Thanks Afrigenie/Afrifella for all your help.

That looks a bit better!

I'll be hlding thumbs that you get to three days!

Sorry to hear about your trouble here, jouda. :( We're definitely not seeing any general issues along the lines of intermittency on our DSL network. Please PM me your account info and we'll troubleshoot this together.

Thanks AfriFella, I am not an Afrihost customer anymore. I appreciate the effort, but I firmly believe this is a Telkom issue.

Any feedback from Telkom / Openserve? What did they do? Was it the router change? The the latest techie to try and solve my problem said he can "see" there is a short on my line somewhere.... Eventually promised to move me to a new port at the exchange today.... lets wait and see.

Thanks for confirming, jouda. :)

The issue appears to have been exchange port related and it looks like some maintenance was completed by Openserve.

connection time now of 02 days and 8 hours. I think its fair to say its stable now.

Still not sure if the change of router did it.......i'll try the other one and see how that goes.

In any event, thanks to the Afri guys on this forum for helping out after 2 months of my battling to get this resolved. Appreciate the support.

I'm really happy to hear that your connection stability has improved! :D

Once you've been able to try out the other modem, let me know how it compares.
