On 12-10-2016 I decided to try the Afrihost mobile offer after not using MTN for years.

Both my prepaid and dataforall sims worked great for 5 days on 2 different phones and were both set to use the Afrihost APN. I also made sure that after every reboot of the phone that they did reboot with the correct APN.

Then come 17-10 and here it all went haywire. Instead of using my afrihost data while the phones were still set to afrihost APN the phone that had airtime loaded started using data at out of bundle rate and it only took a few minutes and I had no airtime left. This left me far from home and important things to do on the net and I could not. There was no airtime left to convert to data. This meant I had to travel 30km to get home to have a network again.

Now the support side. I phoned support that evening and while on the phone the person wanted to speak to a snr person and the call got dropped. When I phoned back I was in a long queue and decided to wait a few minutes. When I phoned again before 20h00 I got told the support center does not take any further calls and I should phone the next day. It seemed many customers had this problem. I sent e-mails to support and showed the network msg's from MTN showing I had no airtime and should buy some. At that point in time I still had 99%+ of my prepaid data left on the Afrihost system and 90%+ on my dataforall sim. At this moment in time all the data is still showing.

Afrihost's Donovan just responded saying the checks on both SIMS show no problem. Nothing is said about the airtime lost or no network for the Afrihost data. When I replied on the e-mail I got a call from Anita (19-10) as my complaint has been escalated. She indicated she will investigate and can see I did not use any data on 17-10 as I could not. Promised to phone me back within 10 minutes to say if they are prepared to refund my out of bundle airtime which does show on the clientzone that it was used on the MTNData APN and not afrihost APN and it is already 5 hours.

I hope that people will realise that Afrihost data is a no go if MTN starts using out of bundle data while the Afrihost APN does have the data paid for.

This is my few days on Afrihost/MTN network and I will never use MTN/Afrihost for mobile data again.

Vodacom is just the BETTER connection for me!!!!!! Lower cost for data via Afrihost means no network or service.

It's up to you to ensure that your phone is using the correct APN.

You can also setup alerts on AH - that warns you after x amount of time that you haven't used the APN at all.

to be fair, i would not expect my old man to know anything about an APN and if caught in this situation i would have expected the service provider to provide the proper support to switch over.

I'm confused what does your old man have to do with the OP?

Using decolonised mathematics, I deduce that ekkekan is MP3s father.

The BIGGEST problem is my phone was on afrihost APN and somehow the data was used on MTNData APN. I check my phone at least 5 times a day and it has never been on MTNData.

Afrihost also confirmed with their stats that MTNData was used.

All the days I used data on the afrihost APN I still got the e-mails to say I have not used data for the last 5 hours.

This will show that there was a problem on 17-10. All Afrihost must do is just to admit some system failed on the day.-17-10 _SNAPS_1268.jpg

No my phone did not switch APN's. It just used the data on a different APN than what was on the phone. It also was only on 17-10.

I deleted all the other APN except Afrihost. That way it's either on Afrihost, or not at all.
I still occasionally get the MTN SMS that says I've used like some tiny amount of out of bundle data.

Yes, same thing happened to me a couple a years ago. Never got my money back. Afrihost/MTN just don't care - for everyone that leaves in disgust, another sucker signs up. And Afrihost still has your money.

Do you not get a message saying you arnt using the AH APN?

No I did not get a msg. This problem was only on 17-10-2016 and before and after Afrihost data is working fine.

Just too bad too sad that on 17-10-2016 all my data was used on out of bundle due to network problems at Afrihost. For the once off problem Afrihost lost me as a client. They would not refund me although support did say over the phone they will refund me and indicated they did have a problem on 17-10-2016.

The key point is my phone showed all day I was connected to the afrihost APN but data was used on myMTN as the APN.
