Hello,

I'm struggling to understand where my Afrihost airtime is going. I'm subscribed to the "Mobile S" package which gives you 100 anytime minutes and 2GBs of data. Now I understand that you don't actually get 100 minutes but rather R79 airtime and its calculated based on their well publicized call rate of 79c a minute.

I had to topup a few times this month and eventually thought to check the call/charge breakdown in the Clientzone. After a few calculations I found that the call rates vary wildly, even between calls to the same numbers. I only phone a few numbers so the comparisons were quite easy. And even though "100 Anytime Minutes" is an estimation I found that the last R82 of Afrihost airtime only bought me 31 minutes of talk time.

Has anybody else found their airtime to disappear a bit quicker than expected? I'm obviously very open to the fact that I'm missing something and/or an idiot.

For me it's pretty spot on, but you need to be aware of the APN change, the APN as you already should know has to be changed to afrihost and if you do not change it then your data you use will be deducted of your airtime instead of the actual 2GB.

This is one of the most annoying feature ever, and because every single cellphone is different on my wife and my cell for instance we could not delete the default APN which would be I think myMTN and had to add another and then select that as default on my router some clever person on this forum showed ppl a way to hack the apn so you could change it on a B593 router.

Now if you take your sim out of the phone and putt another sim in for whatever reason I normally put the sims into my 3G router to use the internet via my pc when I run short on data, then there's a change the apn could reset back to default, and because you would think it's should still be on the one you set it while it's not boom you end up using your airtime as data.

Afrihost does send you an email or sms if they detect you have not being using your data for x hours, it helps but you can quickly use up all your airtime with data.

So that might be why

Check your price plan. *141*4#

Something tells me you are on MTN Zone Per Second. This would mean a base rate of R2.50 - % discount MTN Zone gives at that specific time. Not very good especially if you are making a lot of calls anytime.

*141*4# and Change your price plan to MTN Pay Per Second. It's the 79c per minute price plan. ;)

I believe Cavedog is absolutely spot-on! Dialing *141*4# should get you on the Pay Per Second plan in a jiffy!
