Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Might be better to just take a screenshot of the results rather than copy and paste to keep the format.

There will always be jitter on wireless as the CPE compensate for signal noise which is always changing.

When it comes to towers and their bandwidth it's a difficult thing to predict and to say what speeds are acceptable and which are not. As you know Spectrum is expensive and networks just don't have enough vs demand. Tower bandwidth for this reason is a finite resource and it's shared between users of that tower. You might find that 10 x people are all downloading large files as the same time and that will drag the average speed of each user down until the heavy users are down with their file transfers.

That's just how bandwidth is shared. You won't get a situation where 1 user will be able to all the bandwidth but high data users drags the average speeds shared between users down so speed can vary significantly.

Towers also face issues with power and backhaul. MTN has an extensive fibre backhaul for their towers but if that goes down the tower might fall back to microwave links which aren't as fast which will reduce the available bandwidth even more.

From the trace routes provided it's difficult to determine if a tower is congested as MTn filters those IP's out not to respond and the first IP that responds is a switch on our network.
Appreciate your explanation on everything, though I had wondered more on the point as to why such a huge spike in latency yest. very early on in the morning.

The speeds I'm in fact very happy with given it's set to 1800 MHz frequency, especially the upload.

It therefore seems from what you described, that there's no real point in doing these MTR tests for LTE, but I certainly learnt something & if I move to fibre it'll be appropriate then & at least will be prepared to submit them from the outset, if necessary.

On the totally different subject of data usage which I questioned some weeks ago, I did a router reset a minute or two after midnight on the 21st Dec., though forgot to take a screen-shot of that for proof.

Router figs. on that page also show at any given time that the reset date was on the 21st Dec., but not the time, so would you accept my word, it was at midnight should I submit figures ?

There seemed to be approx. (higher than usual) 450 MB discrepancy between the app & the router when I last checked a day or so ago, so don't know if it's worth submitting the figs. - how much would be the minimum before you guys will investigate a query like this ?

I'd have to add things up again to get to a point-in-time where we're comparing like-for-like obviously - I'd prob. do so at midnight (just after) on a given day, so I get a full no. of days worth checking between the two, then would take a screen-shot then.

This is something I would need to take up with our Noc and Dev team to investigate so if there is any discrepancy and you can show it to us I would be happy to ask the team to have a look for us to see where the usage came from.

I've edited my post somewhat, since you replied - but if I can be awake at 12 midnight tonight, will do some work on it & if necess., submit figs. to you via PM tomorrow a.m.

Thanks for your time today.

No need to respond to this message as it was unintended ; so was the length of it ...

Plan on revising when to submit because I'd rather have screenshots of both beginning and end dates & times (pref. midnight in both cases).

Therefore, hope to start afresh just after midnight (tonight) and as I've slightly over 60 GB bonus data to use 'til month end, should be able to make good enough use of it in the last 2 days of the month to be meaningful ; if not, then will start again on the 1st Jan '22 for easier comparison over a longer time-period again.

I've also since come across a log file in the Client Zone which can be emailed as a .csv file for usage.

Seems very useful & what I was mostly after - more so than the app / website representation - because it has up to 10 numbers after the decimal point in each day's upload & download figures, so hopefully in Excel I can manipulate the figures fairly (ie. reduce figures to get to only 2 after the decimal point) to compare accurately back to the router's figs.

After all that, will again see if necessary to submit at some stage.

Okay whenever you have the screenshots for me I can ask our Dev team to have a look.

The CSV file is quite useful as it breaks it down more.

Hi again, @AfriNatic

Have just sent you a PM to do with Huawei B525 data usage comparison with Afrihost CSV file logs = 30th & 31st Dec. 2021.

As noted in the message, I didn't see a place to upload files (or insert links & images), so have by & large copied the PM into an e-mail to be sent at 12h50 (a few minutes time) incl. 3x attachments, headed-up :

"Afrihost A/c # Axxxxx - this e-mail is for @AfriNatic (from the My Broadband forum) to please take care of ....."

Assuming one way or another, it'll be forwarded to someone in your dev. team to have a look at in due course & see if your system/s for MTN fixed LTE usage need some adjustment ?

Thank you.

EDIT : put into PM msg. instead as separate reply.

This line should have read :

"As noted in the message, I didn't see a place to upload files (ONLY insert links & images)..."

Thanks for your quick reply.

I've been having slow internet from the 21st of December. I have spoken to support about 5 times but nobody knows what is going on.

@AfriNatic - please can you guys keep data usage reflected in the Afri app as MB (as is currently) and not switched to GB format (like it did last month).

This is in the "View daily usage" section I'm referring to in particular.

eg. The MB format will show 415.7 MB used ; the GB one will likely show 0.4 GB used, presumably rounding it down before it gets to halfway? - ie. 450 MB, then go to 0.5 GB thereafter, but all guesswork on part of the client, as we don't know how the system operates.

Have to resort to CSV log files instead of just having it there in the app, viewable at any time - maybe it's a space thing in the app that does the change auto from MB to GB like last month happened ?

At least in MB, you know exactly which side of 400 or 500 MB you're on, along with a fixed figure - again, eg 415.7 or 483.9 MB used.

Same should be in GB - eg. request to keep format of 1812.6 GB and not 1.8 GB.

Can send you screenshots of differences of what I've explained above, later today, when I return home if you like ?

I will ask Dev when we change it to GB but I would imagine it would be easier to read for clients vs the mb reading as it might give the impression the client has more data than they actually have.

Okay, thanks for this note.

From last month, it seems to have changed over after a few days into the month (so reflects in MB first few days, then suddenly switches over to GB).

Others who've had MTN fixed longer than I have (2nd time around) & use the app could confirm or reject this ? ; the first time I never used the app so don't know how long this would have been in effect for, either.

Whatever's best for the majority ... just felt a more accurate representation most would prefer, as I do.

Regards.

I am totally happy for them to keep it the way it is. I need a rough idea of what I have used and what I have left, that's all.

Right now it's showing as MB (for me), not GB (in that section of the app I referred to earlier).

If the same for you, then you seem to be fine with a MB representation as well ... which is more specific.

I’ve used more than a gig so it is showing gigs.

So have I, but for now mine is thankfully showing in MBs ; just to be clear, per attachment (subsequently removed), I'm referring to the daily totals, not the grand total in the middle of the screenshot, which I'm fine with in GBs.
