Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Remember realtime services (streaming included) aren't affected even when you're shaped.

Except that if you visit Youtube's "My Speed" page, it shows I get an average of 2Mbit to Youtube, whereas I can download (when there's no shaping) at 420Kb/s from other places.

It's clear to me, if it's not shaping, there's some issue with Youtube accessed from your network or SA in general. Can you look into that? There have been times where, even at 4am I can't stream 140p videos but if I close Youtube, open a download, full speed. So I dont' think it's any issue with my line/setup at home.

Lucky you, i'm still stuck here..

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

I am feeling like going onto the business account for R100 more, but then I just think of how *** this whole situation is and do not really want to spend more money on AfriHost..

Unfortunately it's a bit of a jump to a 4mb business account though; R300, I think? Having grown used to at least semi-decent streaming I can't envision dropping below 4mb again, so if this little SNAFU doesn't start heading towards resolution I'll have to go see what Telskommel's service is like methinks. Can't see it being worse than the past fortnight on Afrihost, and it's a few bucks cheaper.

Well for me 480p and almost 720p is fine. But yeah, just not sure if I really want to spend my money here anymore. What is the 4MB Uncapped account's pricing like at Helkom? Also, didn't they now also upgrade all their client's lines now. 2mb --> 4mb etc?

The line upgrades are coming from November I believe, but limited to 1 -> 2 and 2 -> 4 if I recall. If your line is already at 4mb+ you're out of luck. As for cost, their 4mb data-only price is R369 and I think the 4mb bundle is R699... but don't quote me on that.

*edit*

Of course, thinking about it, that should mean that you'd be paying current 2mb price for a 4mb line from some time after November. So I will actually save a few bob; I'd be perfectly fine with a moderately decent 4mb line for the time being.

I am currently on the 2mb home uncapped crap. So maybe helkom will have a better solution once I cancel on the 24th. Maybe I can get the free upgrade from 2mb to 4mb. Thus saving a lil bit. Or do I have it wrong?

Mostly right, I think, 'cept that the bump in line-speed will be a gradual roll-out.

I'm just scared to go back to Helkom. Jumped ship from them to AfriHost when I had crap for 2 months there. So I dunno what to do.

Well I hit the big red button and I'm on biz Uncapped now, hopefully it's uncrapped, too.

Please let me know what ur speeds are in speedtest and what latency you are getting. Also, how your Youtube etc is streaming.

Thanks

I'm wary of it as well, but I've been scanning through their uncapped thread - which seems mostly positive - and I had exemplary service from them in setting up new services when we moved recently. Everything's pretty much month-to-month these days anyway. Sad to even contemplate it though; I really do respect Afrihost's usual customer-focussed approach and their debit order is one of the few on our account that honestly isn't a grudge purchase. When I'm getting what I'm paying for. :(

100% agreed

Thanks mate

The SO is doing stuff online now so I can't take accurate readings yet. So if I forget, just PM me :)

I'm also getting a new router from a mate soon, a nice old Linksys that's running dd-wrt so I can soon be able to make sure nothing internal is sucking up bandwidth, my god, how I hate consumer ADSL routers.

HTTP downloads struggling to go over 40kb/s on a 1mb account tonight.

Account Overview
Account Status: Account Active

Does this mean I'm being shaped? On the first of the month?

Credit where it's due - just completed my first download of any size for days now (the rest just failed part way through) - 750 Mb and ONLY took 12 hours - now tell me again how the top 1Mbs downloader managed to do 289 Gb in 1 month - at this rate I will do - wait for it - 45Gb in a month!!! A truly awesome experience Afrihost. BTW Afriguy, 24 hours now since I provided you with the info you asked for by pm and you have not bothered your arse to reply.

I was about to post a similar question. 1 day and 1.3GB in and I am also being shaped.

Is this the new status quo? Is this what the semi-shaped means? It never used to be like this, and I don;t see why this needs to be like this now. Other ISPs, to my knowledge, throttle/shape their customers due to either strain on the network, or due to excessive use on the part of the customer. Is this the case here? According to your site everything is peachy, and with less than 2GB on my tab, I hardly think I would qualify under either scenario.

So which is it, Afrihost?

Never had such a problem until now. I hope Afrihost doesn't disappoint, they have been giving me excellent service since I signed up.

At the risk of being flamed, guys may I suggest coughing up a hundred or two for peace of mind and a rock solid connection and go business uncapped. You wouldn't regret it, I don't torrent but my IDM dloads, streaming, etc are on tap and not to mention your clientzone stating 'no shaping applied'.

I've been with AF for 6 months and I really felt the strain recently with their shaping, upgraded (with the help of the Legend - AfriGuy) on Friday and I'm just totally blown away.

R300, if you're on 4mb... which is just a bit more than I'm willing to spend on Band-Aids.
