Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

The latency seems to have returned to normal on our network, however we are shaping quite heavily in the JHB area.

Thats not answering my question, Firstly i am in Durban and have been shaped 24 hours a day for the past 11 days.
I have hardly even been using my account as I signed up for a trial uncapped account from another ISP so i can get my downloads going...

Why am I permanently shaped?

Thats not really answering Fatality07s question is it?

"Any idea when the afrihost network will be back to normal running capacity?" When is this "normal usage time" you referred to(not talking about after hours)

Gosh I dont wanna feel like im attacking you guys, I really like you guys. I just feel "cheated" paying for only "real time service" for me internet is more than that just browsing. :(

We don't dictate the shaping, it looks at the overall network usage and decides on shaping policies from there.

But you wrote the policies, correct?

Just shape P2P to say 10% and HTTP to 25% across the board from 07H00 to 18H00. Then open it to 50% from 18H00 to 21H00. After that 100% till 07H00 again. Problem solved.
This can be interim until extra capacity is purchased or IPC upgraded. No need to dynamically shape the living daylights out of us.

At least its transparent. And real-time services won't feel the pinch.

You shouldn't be shaped this much, but please remember that shaping looks at projected usage totals and the overall network load.

The latency looks to have mostly normalised, so there should be an improvement going forward. Noted that we are still shaping quite heavily though.
We still feel that shaping according to the overall network load, and only touching P2P and HTTP downloads is the best way to handle traffic on our network.

We feel as though the way it's currently setup is the most fair. I really don't think we'll be making any drastic changes to our current shaping policies.
The way our Engineers have this setup is what suites our network best. We cannot simply shape x amount during x hours as this will still most likely cause congestion.

We're shaping heavily at the moment due to latency.

I know it may seem from the forums that there was a mass exodus, but we didn't see a significant spike on signup growth to anticipate that increase in demand that we've seen.

just btw... I would not be so complacent if I were you.
A lot of people only cancelled mweb last month so they are still using it this one. For this month a lot of people are thus evaluating IPS's before deciding which one to hop to first. So whether or not you get a lot of sign ups for next month or not might not even be directly related to mweb cancellations anyway.

We've all known this, and suggested it as a cause, for weeks. Goddammit man, kill torrents during daytime across the board if you have to, but it cannot go on like this! The heaviest of the heavy downloaders would have moved to business accounts, which you insist on keeping unshaped across the board 24/7, thus ruining the connections of those who haven't.

I agree! Shape torrents and business accounts with excessive usage in residential areas if they are the problem.

I do not torrent day and night. I got uncapped so that I can download something when I want to, and not worry if I'm still going to have enough cap left for the 10 gig battlefield patch next week for instance. At the moment that is not offered by your product. I am shaped into the ground whenever I try and download something. And no, I am not going to schedule downloads at night. BTW please add that your uncapped bundles description. "Please note you can really only download at night."

Guys we can't just shape torrents - our shaping is setup for a reason, and from what I can tell - we're keeping it the way it is, to give the best possible experience on our network to the biggest amount of clients at a time. We cannot accurately shape residential clients on a Business account. What if a client works from home? The questions can become endless here.
I'm really not sure where the assumptions are coming from - Business and P2P isn't what's causing the issues here.

From the Business Uncapped thread:

We design and advertise the product to be unshaped, essentially it's a Capped account that has a rate limit and is locked to a single line. It composed of the same rules and provisions. If we were to arbitrarily change the rules without notice, it would not only make us guilty of falsely advertising our product, but there would be a massive backlash from clients who specifically signed up for unshaped performance.

You shouldn't be shaped this much, but please remember that shaping looks at projected usage totals and the overall network load.

My projected total is at 64gb so i don't think that would count against me in terms of the shaping.

You guys have had over 10 days to analyse and go through the network load.
Do you know whats causing the extra load? or when it will go back to normal parameters?

Again, the network load issues have started trending to become better. It's really unfortunate that the latest latency increase have skewed this though :(

It is entirely plausible that those who moved across were the very heaviest bandwidth users. I have no facts or stats to back that up though. What I can say that the bulk of the increase in demand is from torrents on Uncapped accounts. So again, a desperate plea for everyone to schedule as much P2P overnight as possible. There is tons of unused bandwidth overnight that we're more than happy for everyone to make use of, and will help us make the case for upgrades a lot stronger.

From the Business Uncapped thread:

Going to use an Afrikaans expression here....Kom weer?..... So it's "a significant chunk" but it's not causing the problem.......

Well.....ok then. Honestly I just wish we could get some official communication, WITH timelines as to when this will be sorted. Because I'm giving it till the 24th and with no fixed timeline or marked improvement I'm gone. You guys are great, but the product is not anymore. And I'm not paying R300 extra for a business line just to ensure I can download stuff when I need it. And forget turbocharge. That'll give me 5 small files I need when I need them and then we're back to square one.

We're being as open and honest as we possibly can :( I really wish I could give you guys a time on when things will be sorted, I can tell you that we're doing absolutely everything we can to sort this out.

Why are you on an uncapped account if clearly you need to be on a capped account? You can easily deal with a 100gb capped account. And please also define "excessive user"
