Not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but shaping won't affect streaming.
What shaping service are you seeing degraded?
No no hang on, I think there might be some miscommunication here :P I know YouTube (streaming) isn't supposed to be affected by shaping - yet you said we're seeing heavy shaping as a response to me saying my YouTube keeps on buffering. Think that's where we got confused, because you blamed the poor streaming performance on shaping :)

But to be honest, alot of us DO see a degradation in streaming (YouTube and Netflix, but especially apparent on YouTube) when shaping is active. Now this might be a sign that somehow YouTube et al is affected by the shaping mechanisms, or that the shaping shows a deeper problem - that the network is under strain and that streaming just can't pull down at the speed it's supposed to, even when bypassing the shaping.

Yet, just about every body in the South are being shaped at 18.8% for Http and 6.25% for torrents, for about 18 hours of the day.
That means for about 18 hours a day you lose 81.2% of your line speed when you try to do a Http download and a whopping 93.75% on P2P downloads.
Not a lot can be downloaded with those figures in place and then it seems your shaping figures are not accurate either, as I pointed out over the weekend.

P2P shaping during the day I can understand, but Http?

And the community says :
A-a-ahaamen a-ahaa-a-amen Ahahahaaaa--mennn

Are you serious? Yes it does affect streaming big time.

Why is it when I use turbocharge streaming comes to life in full Hd glory?
Exactly what happened to me. I was assured it wasn't affected, but it clearly was being shaped. And not just a little bit.

"Isolated cases" "Cannot replicate"

The problems were all my side apparently... Strange how using a different account/ISP fixed all the issues.

I've brought this up many times and have had the same responses and the same results with turbo charges, you're not a alone in this

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

Can someone please tell me which way this works, do I get 6.5% of my maximum line speed or is it being reduced by 6.5%

I have downloaded 11 gigs in total since the beginning of the month and I am getting 5kb download speeds at all times.
I use their free trial account and I get full speeds, I have never dealt with such a useless company in my life. Sickening.

It is the percentage that you should get from your linespeed. I worked out that 6.25% of my 4Mbps line should give me 26kB/s if I look at my speedtests, but I get 10 - 13kB/s and there is nothing wrong with my line or exchange. So when you are shaped, this a browsing account

Afrihost keep saying that "we will never throttle you!". You know what? I prefer the Mweb approach, throttle me at a certain point, but don't castrate my service ALL THE TIME. Lesser of two evils kind of thing.

So I use 11 gigs and now all I get is a piss willy 6.5%? And they are not the cheapest by a long way. Bastards.

Yes, the shaping is not based on individual usage, but rather what is happening in an area.
So during the 18.8% shapping on Https, you are losing 81.2% of your line speed and on 6.5% you are losing 93.5% of your line speed.
On average my speedtest shows 3.4Mbps, which means
3400kbps / 8 = 425kB/s downloadspeed
425kB/s * 18.8%(shaping percentage) = 79.9kB/s

Now try to download a biggish driver or other file and that translate from maybe 20 minutes vs 15 hours.
The impact is huge.

Unfortunately this is not occasional shaping.
About the only hours we are not shaped is from about 02:00 - 06:00/07:00.

Also the shaping is not so gradually as one would think. On Sunday it kicked in at 50% & 50% and within 20 minutes it went to 25% & 25%, 25% & 12.5% and finally 18.8 & 6.25%

is there a reliability issue with AH Network Tester?

I had a Telkom techie here this morning and showed him some of the results I was getting using the tester, he then ran pings and traceroutes straight from the command line and the results looked very different, although he did promise to go down to the exchange to test my line and port but I haven't heard any feedback yet.

I've got it running at the moment (the AH tester) and it's been grinding away in the background for the last 5 minutes with traceroutes

/bump

anyone got an answer for me?

Lucky... my line got shaped at 12.5% and 6.5% immediately (from the 1st morning of the month).... it has only let-up on 2 occasions since then, for a total of 4 hours. 20minutes into downloading (not even full speed), the line gets shaped again at this level.

I decided to downgrade the line from 10MB Uncapped to 4MB Uncapped Business, and the speeds are terrible at the moment. The 4MB Business speed test is 3MB (sometimes), and the maximum I can download on any protocol is 325kB/s (not even 3MB speed, never mind 4MB).

EDIT: and YES.... prioritisation is OFF.... and YES, my 4MB MWEB line was much better! :p

So.... I haven't downloaded anything in almost 2 months, been streaming mostly, but yesterday I needed to download myself an ISO of Win 7 for a recovery disk, and lo and behold, the torrent is still downloading! Needless to say, when I pay for a 4mb uncapped account, I expect my downloads to download at 4mb speeds, not 56k dial-up speeds. I don't pay you only 6.25% of the fee do I? I bet you if I did, I would be handed over almost instantly!

Also, the streaming SUCKS big hairy dog b@lls at the moment.... no use in denying it, just look at all the complaints in this thread!

P.S. I would be ashamed to work for Afrihost, having to lie to your customers all the time... don't you guys get sick of it? Does it not eat your conscious at night knowing you're taking hard earned money and then delivering a sub-par service with a smile on your face?

Hi there AfriGuy

I have sent you a PM. :) If you can have a look and see if it is possible. Thank you :)
