The East got it's full upgrade, how's your performance been?

what?????!?!?!?!?!?!?! I thought it was a part order

performance on real time is great but p2p and downloads are heavily shaped.

I specifically asked Afriman on Tuesday, regarding the East.

The East got the full planned upgrade to my knowledge, but we're also implementing a long terms failsafe, so we shouldn't run into problems in the future.

I see many people are complaining about shaping. I know that the numbers are pretty awful right now, but please remember that we are testing to find the right "sweet spot" for how we deploy shaping, so that we offer the best overall experience. Right now, we're shaping to slowly release and find a good balance, rather than flood the network and then try to shape aggressively (which will also result in latency and horrible throughput for Shaped and Unshaped DSL users).

Please just bear with us a little longer while we do this, we need assess the full extent of demand so that we can make the necessary calculations to ensure we deliver a good, value for money experience following the upgrade of the network.

So is this the case for all regions? Because I see complains from South, East and North. Why would you do this for the North without any change of IPC capacity?

What really pisses me off is that if shaping is active, I'm always shaped to 12.5/6.25% making P2P downloads 16 times slower. I hardly ever see a somewhat reasonable figure like 75% because I can't believe that your demand is 16 times higher than your capacity at any given time and if that would be the case then why even bother with meager 20% IPC upgrades.

All good here? Like no issues at all?

Been good for the past month, only one issue which lasted about 10 minutes? After which my sync upped from 10019Kbps to 10240Kbps?

Z

Give it 2 weeks... your line will become choppy, speedtests will take ages to complete, and all of a sudden your SNR will drop below 9dbm. I currently have an open call with Telkom (5th in 1.5 months) for this issue. Telkom tech called me from the exchange and told me that the new cards they are using are extremely sensitive. He said that in most cases, each individual port has to be configured on a line-by-line basis to get the SNR up to at least 18dbm (which is where the old cards used to sync/stabalise). The new cards are purely fibre optic, and have to have media converters/adapters connected to get everything working correctly. Also, they are in the process of upgrading the back-haul bandwidth from the SDC's/MSAN units with new fibre. This is expected to be completed in Cape Town by the end of May, at which time most 10MB clients should be able to get up to 40MB, with a great improvement in latency, attenuation and SNR values.

Let's wait and see.... hopefully, we can look forward to less line issues, and less back-and-forth between Telkom and our ISP's ;)

@AfriMan: I have a question regarding your capped bundles.
If I order a 300GB data package (150+150) you are advertising this as R599 and the 20Mbps line on its own for R499.
If I order the same thing as a capped bundle (300GB + 20Mbps) you are asking for R1497. How does that work? Shouldn't the bundle be cheaper than the separate price?

Hows that "sweet spot" coming along? Pretty much on the verge of giving up now. My ISP is actually taking energy out of my day everyday and the last time I had that problem was in 2001

The spot I find myself in in Cape Town at the moment is everything but sweet, so I'm also wondering how long this is going to take. Since a day after the IPC upgrade, I've been shaped constantly at 25%/6.5%.

Questions to AfriHost

18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P on 4MBPS Uncapped.
(BTW, does this mean download is only @ 18.8% of 4MBPS capacity, or does it mean it's 18.8% less than 4MBPS capacity?)
Only changed to uncapped mid April.
For the last two days even realtime streaming has been terrible. I cancelled DSTV and got uncapped because I am tired of watching repeats and ads, but with the buffering taking place, it's worse than having to watch ads and repeats.

Response from Afrihost: "only non-realtime services are SOMETIMES shaped".

Are the following streaming sources realtime or non-realtime?
- YouTube
- Cricfree.tv
- tvonline.cc
- Netflix
- Hulu

If they are realtime, and nothing has changed except my package with AH from capped to uncapped, then why is the streaming buffering now, but didn't on capped?

Apologies if I don't make sense, but what I know about these things is not much. I pay and expect it to work (maybe expecting too much)?

EDIT: Another question

On Afrihost Compare Packages page, it states the price of business 4mbps as R797, but on client zone, it states the price as R697. Which is it?

If you want the same performance from uncapped as you got on capped you need business.

I thought realtime services were meant to be the same across the board, and that only non-realtime services were shaped on home uncapped. Therefore, theoretically, we should see the same performance levels on home uncapped for youtube and other forms of streaming as on capped and business packages.
But, maybe I misunderstood afrihost, and realtime services are also shaped, and that would make shaping no different to throttling.

AfriMan, I'm very confused with what the ClientZone reports regarding shaping.

Apparently I should be shaped to 18%/6% but yet my HTTP downloads run at full line speed, while my P2P is basically dead. Is CZ reporting it wrong or is there something else going on? :erm:

The East did get it's full upgrade, while the South has seen a partial delivery of IPC and the North with a pending upgrade.

so why are we being shaped so heavily in the east? Is the extra capacity sufficient to meet demand and you just "finding the sweetspot" for shaping? or is the east still under capacity?

It's taking shape slowly but surely :)
Really sorry that we've let you down. At the end of the day, we want to see all of our DSL products perform optimally. This is something we're actively working on.

Shaping can be expected during peak times, however with the addition of the extra capacity it should ease off earlier than what we've seen previously.
