Afrihost uncapped FAQ

Not the same. Afrihost does not have limitations nor do they cap. Nowhere does it say that they will limit your data usage. The 'fair usage' instead indicates that if a consumer conforms to a certain pattern of usage, then the provider reserves the right to withhold further services from them in the interests of maintaining service integrity. I.E. they will not 'cut you off' but simply not offer the service to you anymore, which is not the same thing as capping, regardless what ASA says, whch is about how it is advertised, which is clearly not 'uncapped per se'. Whether this is 'ok' is up for grabs, but is a different issue.

Edit, lol I see that their faq is different from the bottom of their signup page, which does talk about termination, in which case it would be more like the above.

just curious. if i buy a 10 gig cap from isp X. i also have to conform to a pattern of just 10 gig usage by which also provider X would withhold the the service... seems same thing, but that is just me :D

the point and case i linked was to show that the OP/Poster do in a way have a point where sol matrix would say uncapped, but in fact it was a capped product because they would cut you off for rest of the month if you overstep a certain usage. this could be linked to afrihost as they also as you say would stop the service at certain usage.

A very fair offering. Well done.

Telkom is allegedly going to up ADSL speeds soon.

Assuming that 384 is upped to 512, how would that affect your offering? Would one still be throttled at 384, or would 512 now cost R197?

What the FAQ seemed to say was that people would not be cut off during a month, but rather that the month-to-month service would not be offered for renewal. This is a different thing. The company is not terminating the account, but saying that they reserve the right to withhold additional services. This is not capping, at least imo. While the service is active, the user can download as much as he or she wants, but the provider reserves the right to restrict who to offer the service to, on a month-to-month basis. It does not appear to be the same as:

"The complainants are of the opinion that the advertisement is misleading as the word “uncapped” implies limitless Internet access. However, the respondent disconnects a user if his/her data limits have been reached."

No it's worse. Because they cannot deliver on what they advertised they will now completely suspend your service.

Uncapped = Unlimited You cannot go and reduce service levels or suspend service if a client used a product as advertised.

WTF is wrong with consumers in this country?

Consumers are generally ignorant. Capping is a certain kind of limitation, just as throttling is another. Because throttling is a limitation, and it is used on uncapped accounts, clearly uncapped does not mean unlimited, in any substantial sense of the word. By throttling an account you are reducing the amount of data possible to download, and thus creating the same effect in terms of limiting data usage that a cap would. The difference is that the user is not disconnected, which is the capping issue - a certain type of limitation. I think that Afrihost's fair usage threshold is a completely acceptable limitation that is compatible, like throttling, with calling the account uncapped, since the account is not disconnected at a usage limit.

To sum: Uncapped = never disconnected at a usage limit. This is compatible with Afrihost's fair usage policy, as I understand it.

consumers in this country generally want everything imaginable for free, and demand premium service on top of it. There's a reason why WA said it's unsustainable. Simply put, NOTHING is EVERY unlimited. period. It's physically impossible, and financially impractical for anyone to give you unlimited (i.e. more than 100000 terbytes, if that's even possible) and still stand their ground. IF you can't be reasonable, then don't expect the suppliers to lick your arse for money.

ireally wanna know what do u dl.. 200gb of videos.. do u even watch them? 2hr of pr0n movie u probably only spend 10min on it.

Go buy yourself a Mac. There is nothing you can do on it buy browse iTunes and download podcasts. When you start buying movies that are 720p or 1080p, or buy a season pass for a couple of seasons of TV programs you will see that 100-200Gb is easy to use up, even on a crappy 4Mb line.

Do not go and think that everyone that uses bandwith is using it for pirate purposes. If you lived in a first world country and had access to these first world services, you would think the same.

Look at the the rest of the world. Because we live in Africa doesn't mean we have to put up with African witchdoctors changing the definition of uncapped to suit their needs. Thats not ayoba.
