So here's some personal experience I've had that I thought I'd share. This is especially aimed at Mweb customers who's thinking of moving over to Afrihost because it's cheaper, to save you from the frustration I went through.

Do not do it. Just don't. I was with Mweb for a couple of years and 3 months ago moved to Afrihost because of lower cost. It's only +-R100 difference in price, but in my experience it's light years different in service. I think during my 90 days with Afrihost 60 of those I spent cussing at the either the latency or the slow download speed I was getting. Even though it was a 4MB uncapped account, during the day it was never that fast. It felt like a permanently handicapped account. And not the Oscar type handicap either. More the Malema type.

I am moving back to Mweb at the start of next month, and I have never been happier to pay more for a service.

I am with Afrihost and have never had issues with latency. I was also with Mweb previously and didn't have any problems with them either (however it was when I only had a 384K line) so I suppose each to their own.

I love my afrihost account

Really? They even admitted they have problems: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/439635-Afrihost-Uncapped-ADSL-Feedback/page74

Posted today. The opinion I made is if you compare the 2 though. Mweb has a vastly superior service in my personal experience. Sure they had issues at times, but Afrihost is just in another league with constant problems. Every single time I had an issue I could find others on the forum posting about it as well so I'm confident I was not an isolated case. And yes this is for 4MB babies; I can't comment on the other speeds.

These accounts all seem to work differently for everyone. I suppose it's a case of trialling them and finding one that works best for you.

I have an Openweb Gold account, and the speeds are awesome, when it works. When it doesn't, you mail support and they give you a new account login on the same backbone that suddenly starts working again. It's great that it resolves the problem, but becomes highly annoying after the 20th time.

I'm trialling an Mweb account again (who I left due to capacity issues and poor speeds), and speeds seem to be great again. If it continues until the end of the month then I'll be ditching Openweb. I will scream if I'm given a new login one more time.

For me I had the same experience as Brenden_E - am on MWEB now and never have problems.

Maybe 2 - 5ms latency difference. But other than that I don't have any problems. Not at home during the day to check, but evenings all is running well even on weekends

I am on Afrihost 10mb uncapped and I get really good service.
When playing on local Mweb servers if I compare latency Im usally in the top three - 7 to 11ms so no problems there.
I have hit 900kB/sec during the day (average 700kB/sec) and over 1mB/sec over weekends so I couldn't be happier there as for Mweb in the past on a 4mb uncapped my average p2p speed during the day was around 45kB/sec although I have mates on Mweb 1mbps that get 100kB/sec during the day wierd

I enthusiastically got an Afrihost uncapped 4 meg. What a disappointment. After three months cancelled and went back to Telkom. I need consistent reliable throughput.

How are you finding the Telkom uncapped accounts? Hows the shaping / speed (relative to advertised speed) consistency been for you? Thinking of moving over from Telkom shaped 20+30GB which is my primary account at the moment
