Just a quick one to find out if anybody else from MyBB is making their way to Tankwa Town this year.

Its my first one, and the excitement is seriously becoming too much to bear.

Also, any survival tips from previous burners?

Not been to AB but we drive a lot in the vicinity on the dirt roads. My advice would be to drive slowly, stop quite often just to check you don't have a puncture and buy a tyre repair kit.

If you catch the puncture early and it's not in the sidewall of the tyre, then you can usually repair it fairly easily and carry on whereas if the tyre deflates and you keep driving on it you may damage it beyond repair.

So, check your spare tyre, get a repair kit and pump / mini compressor. There will be people able to fix any punctures at the venue, but if you get a puncture while en route it may be more complicated. People regularly get multiple punctures.

Along with driving slowly (<80 kmh) on the dirt if you're in a platkar especially, it may help to deflate your tyres to about 1.8bar.

What causes these punctures? Rocks in the road? Thorns? Slashed tyres from potholes?

Just interested...

I've been keen to get to AB for a while, perhaps I should make the effort :)

@biometrics, nice man, good luck and looking forward to seeing you there... Going to be camping at the Jozi Barrio between 7'ish and 8'ish :)

Thanks for the advice on the tyres. Dont think i am going to be driving for this one as the only car I could take is a Mini Cooper S (probably the most unsuitable car for AB ever), so am looking at catching a lift with some friends.

jealous!! wish i could go. damn sisters wedding is over the same period :(
enjoy okes! my mates went there last year and came back different people... in a good way

Btw, if you have your smart phone with you to take photos look out for the wifi SSID "Join Burn Chat". It's a high power open wifi access point connected to a Raspberry pi running an Apache web server. We've written a basic chat web site where you can chat or leave messages. Since it's easy to lose your friends all day you can use it to keep in contact.

It should have a range of a few km. Enter any address into a browser and you'll be redirected to the chat page.

All of this running on a solar electric system.

That is really awesome. Kudos!

We'll be around 9-ish though we may associate with a belly dancing group doing a steampunk theme (not sure of the location yet). Either way look out for the pirate flag hiding the omni directional wifi antenna about 5 meters up ...

Arrrrr!

This is sounding better and better... Pirate radio, pirate wifi... awesomeness... looks like we are camping quite close (7:15ish), and I know some peeps close to you at 9ish. will pop through and say hi :D

the road is full of sharp shale, as is the ground at camp site itself, if you have thick-walled all terrain tyres on a 4X4 the need to deflate is less than if you're in a sedan with normal road tyres, you'll see tyre carcasses all along the road

read the survival guide on the AB website, it's invaluable

This will be my 3rd AB can't wait!

First time I went we only arrived at 1am in a 1.4 Polo. People were amazed we had no punctures.

The road there is a treacherous one.

first day back at work in the default world... :/

What is this thing I am typing on, and wtf am I actually doing here? Where is the sun, and why am I in a cubicle? *So much confusion*.

Highlights of the year for me were as follows:
1. Reflection with L2H2 doing the projections completely blew my mind...
2. The Stock Exchange

Ended up having to take the Mini this year, with 2 other peeps in the car on the way down, and 3 on the way back. For a little sporty hot hatch, she did very admirably. Only one tire punctured on the dirt, and it was repaired nice and quickly.
