I had 10 mbps fiber with Afrihost and decided that I want to upgrade to 50mbps (Down)/25mpbs (Upload) and I am not sure what they are doing but hell, I am having some serious issues with the 50 mbps.

I am getting anything between 1 mbps and 25 mbps download and 19 upload, never have I seen it run at 50mbps as what I am paying for. I've complained and logged a ticket with them and the say "its just a simple connection issue" they did some "magic" and it ran at 40mbps for a day or two and then it got sluggish again.

Is there anyone that is experiencing the same issue? I am really considering moving over to alternative ISP.

Hi,

If you have a ticket number for me I can investigate what went wrong with the upgrade. 50/25 means it's Openerve right? We don't get many speed complaints from clients on Openserve so there is something that went wrong.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the uproar, kind of forgot about this. decided to move to coolideas. I've already started the process and hopefully, they will provide better service than what I had at afrihost.

Its probably too late.

Lets just run some tests.

1. Connect to your router via a LAN network cable. Make sure your cable is Cat5e or is the one that came with the router.
2. Log into the routers web interface and configure your router to be in bridge mode for the WAN interface.
3. Setup a PPPoE connection on your PC or laptop thats connected via the LAN cable with the credentials supplied by Afrihost
4. Make sure the network profile for the PPPoE is set to "Public"
5. Better yet make sure your Firewall lists the PPPoE as "Untrusted"
6. Perform speed tests.

It would appear the DIR-816 does have issues.

The above links are related to WiFi but to isolate both WiFi and to get best speeds, use LAN cable with the router in bridge mode. This way the router is asked to do very little.

:( We can investigate the issue still if you are interested?

9 times out of 10 when I help someone who has an issue with upgrading their line speed it's because they have a crap router that just simply can't handle 50 to 100Mbps speeds both on the wan side, and through the WIFI radios. The cheap and nasty routers that you get for free from most ISP's have very low-powered CPUs and ridiculously small amounts of RAM. They're fine for 10mbps or 20Mbps, but for faster speeds you really need to invest in a good quality router, preferably with a separate dedicated wifi access point that can handle the very high throughput demands of a 50 to 100Mbps line.

In short - Moved away from Afritoast

I decided to stick it out for a month or two because of the billing period and cancellation etc. did the double-up promo on the 50mbps and it was complete trash. Had under 10mbps on a 100mbps line

Phoned Afritoast support they said it could be the router and they want to send out a techie but if there isn't anything wrong with the line I will have to cough up 1k. My luck the day when the techie, the line will work perfectly.

Decided to move away from Afrihost to Cool ideas. Took a 100mbps line with Cool ideas, popped their details in the same router, and BAM now I am getting above 60mbps download and 40mbp upload during the day and at night above 90mbps download and 70mbps upload.

Very happy with Cool ideas and so glad I don't have to deal with afritoast anymore
