Aftermarket Mechanical Warranties

Hi Guys,

So I'm looking to buy a MINI later this year . I won't be getting a brand new one, but anything from 2009 upward, and so it will not have a motor plan. Have any of you had experience with these aftermarket warranties? If so;

• What is/was the cost of the plan (and was it once-off/monthly);
• What has been your experience so far in terms of claims;
• Which one would you recommend?

i wonder if there is a limit to what they would cover as well? i just had my gearbox replaced on my A4 and all i can say is thank fsck for a warranty, at the dealership , you sign a invoice type thing which they send off to Audi , the A4 1.8T 8 speed multitronic gear box , ex vat and labour, was a whooping R85000

I had a policy with SA Warranties.

I think it was between 6 and 8k. Financed it as part of the deal I took with my previous car.

Great. As long as the car has a proper service history (in my case, it had to be serviced with the agents before and up until the SA warranties policy ran out), you're good to go.

With SA warranties, and I suspect any other company, there are limitations though. It varies on the parts / work to be done / age / mileage of the car.

The only hassle I had was when they refused to pay out for some work. Unfortunately an incompetent workshop was dealing with them, so they got things mixed up. After phoning the call center, I cleared it up myself.

We have had experience with two:

R20,000 for a car just under 3 years old (30,000km on the clock) about to go out of the manufacturers warranty, and about R 7000,00 for a car with a "time expired" MotorPlan, but still under 100,000km.

Claims:

Problems with both vehicles, not able to claim a single cent! The 20k plan was taken out by my elderly stepdad. I think they saw him coming - recognized a soft target and screwed him good.

The other was taken out by me for my ex. Car developed a problem (which was the subject of a recall overseas) and they managed to wriggle out of it. I was very busy with work at the time and traveling a lot. Unless you are prepared to get ugly, they will wear you down with excuses, won't return calls or answer email etc etc. Eventually you just give up.

Recommend:

Personally, I wouldn't.

Hmm...thanks for the input guys. Now I have more to think about. Buying new is still out of the question at this point in time. I may just have to save up some more and buy one that's still in motorplan, and try to extend it if possible.

20k for a plan for a fairly new car sounds horribly off. It should be around the 8k figure.

Secondly, they only cover certain parts. They gave me a fairly comprehensive list of what's covered and what's not for my old car, and how much they'd cover.

If something is covered and they refuse to pay out, it's for a reason - one of them being the car not having a FSH OR the car being serviced at a non-reputable workshop.

It's worth it IMO.

It's worth it IMO.

I looked at that. And walked away. There were to many restrictions, and often they will only pay approx 40% or less for specific repairs. You can only claim x number of times a year, and each different component is a seperate claim, ie radiator, carb(if that type) both go then it counts as 2 claims.

And if the policy mentions a % and an amount, they will only pay the lesser of the 2.

This was motorite october last year. The OP would be better off placing a set amount per month into a Ccard and leaving it there for rainy days.
