Is it fair to suppress someones salary based on their age alone?

Yes. If that someone has never wanted to become more a waffle maker.

Hey if they willing to work for less than what they could potentially be worth... then sure. I assume they are under your employ? There’s no legal requirement to pay someone a certain amount being a certain age doing a certain job.

No. If you can do the job, you can do the job.

If that employee feels aggrieved, they can probably go seek assistance from the CCMA or some other arbitration process but they would need to provide the proof of such an allegation that they're getting paid less than a younger employee with less experience in the same type of position at the same company. Ultimately that employee (waffle maker) can apply for a position at another company who gives a better salary package.

So a 25 year old does a job better than a 35 year old you going to pay him less because he has 10 years less experience?
See this all the time and it's very outdated thinking. I went for an interview about 4 years ago and told the guy I'm looking for R50k a month. His reply was no way he's paying someone my age R50k. I was already earning R48xxx at that stage so thanked him for wasting my time. People seem to equate age to skill yet I've noticed with many people the older they get, the more relaxed the become or they have more family responsibilities etc so they cannot dedicate their time to keeping their skills up to date like they did before. They then become lauded for their years in the field and not whether they can actually perform. Of course this is a generalisation but it happens often.
