Im currently running a Ati 9550 SE 128MB AGP graphics card.....I dont want to change my motherboard/cpu RAM etc....so my question to you guys is:

What kind of AGP graphics upgrade can I do and is there a place that lists the models...I just want to know whats better than mine out there...and see if its worth the time and money....TIA

just like killadoob said - AGP is dead, tho my friend was in a similar predicament just a month ago. He wanted to upgrade his Graphics card, but his board only supported AGP and he couldnt afford to get a whole new setup, just for a PCI-Express slot.

So anyways after we looked around, he got himself a GeForce 7600GS last week. Now, he's playing FEAR in full and Quake 4, one setting short of maximum.

heres my advice: the difference between PCI-Express and AGP is very small, so its not a bad thing, but the only problem lies with cutting yourself off from further upgrades - if you were to get a new setup - it'll almost definitely be PCI-Express and you wont be able to use your new card. but if you dnt plan on upgradng netime soon, then with full support, get a new card.

SO HERES YOUR OPTIONS:

1) most logical choice. get a new setup with PCI-Express and then get yourself a "new age" card. This choice is if you're really looking into the future.

2) get a new card (your original choice)
seeing my friends performance i would highly recommend the 7600GS if you're a budget, BUT, the 7800GS isnt much more and its a lot better.
search here for prices:
www.computersonly.co.za
www.buycomputersonly.co.za
www.prophecy.co.za
www.jump.co.za
or the previously mentioned sites to name a few

if you have family in the UK
then try www.scan.co.uk or www.komplett.co.za

3) IF you want to choose option 1 but you on a tight budget, then check out my ad - i'm selling my currrent setup - which is perfect for gaming - it just needs a graphicsa card, BUT even with the onboard - it can play anything on low.

if i am not mistaken, ATI will be releasing DX10 AGP cards soon-ish.

Yes, and if you want the current best AGP card out there, go for Ati 1950, but it only supports DX9.

I'm running a Socket 775 board with AGP and using a Geforce 6600AD.

Think I'll just up my RAM to 2GB and get an Ati AGP DX10 graphics card, when it gets released.

Then I'll wait for Vista SP1 and might upgrade when it gets released, but I'm in NO rush. Running Vista Transformation pack, so I've got most of Vista's eye candy, without the performance hit.

Ja, ATI 260XT should be a good buy once it comes out in AGP.

atm the X1950 is a great card though, too bad AGP prices are usually a bit higher than better performing PCI-E cards.

I bought a XFX 6600GT for R250 in the Cape Ads a while back. Try your luck there, you don't spend too much money and you're uograded

Hi

I have a LeadTek 6800GT AGP 256MB, would upgrading to a XFX 7950GT AGP 512MB be worth the money? The cost of this card is R3000.00

Upgrading my components ie new motherboard, processor, memory graphics card would be far more.

My current hardware:

P4 3.4
Asus P4c800e deluxe
1GB RAM
Runing Windows XP SP2

I basicaly play Doom 3, Quake 4, Age of Emipes III, and all the Half-Life 1 & 2games
