I would like to know if anyone knows if a-gps is activated in South Africa and on all cellphone towers.
Also I am interested to know if others using S60 (Symbian) version 3.1
on nokia phones are able to get my location on google mobile maps working in SA. Does this work in all areas in South Africa.
If it does work what location accuracy are you getting.
thanks

AGPS does not use Cell towers for location

Hi Rory,
How location with GPS works is it first downloads a file from the GPS satellites containing data about where the satellites are and then uses that to get a fix. This is why it takes so long to get a fix the first time you use your GPS. What A-GPS does is to use the internet (usually via GPRS/3G) to download this file (about 50kB) which then means you can get a lock more quickly and in areas with weak signals where you might fail to get this data. Once you have got this data you no longer need to connect to the intenet for location information.

AGPS is not like car tracking systems like Matrix, which use the cell towers to get an approximate position of your car.

Yes, A-GPS is activated and it does work.

My N96 got about 8 GPS Signals in about 8 seconds indoors. I see the data connection goes on immediately when I open my GPS Data and go to Satellite Status.

8 Seconds indoors for a GPS Lock is awesome.
