AI could be making people dumber

I have said this for a long time, AI will not benefit mankind and it will not end well. But the defenders seem to want to defend this unnatural fukkery to the death.

I think AI (as we term the technology now) will benefit humanity, but we have to get over this obsession of AI everything, and also relying on AI for tasks that it shouldn't be doing.

If we can get over that hurdle, then AI will benefit humanity but I'm not sure we will get over that hurdle before things get considerably worse.

When the written word was invented, people said it would make people dumber because now people dont have to memorize everything. When they invented the calculator people said it would make us dumber because we are not doing the calculations our selves.

Now they say the same thing about AI.

In reality, using something like a calculator did not make us dumber, it enabled us to do more advanced calculations more accurately.

I think the same will be true with AI, those that learn to work with it will be able to do more than those who dont.

Neither the written word, or the calculator themselves made shyte up though, so that analogy is a bit flawed.

There is a lot of shyte in the written word. Its full of fantasy and mythology, but yeah, a calculator not making stuff up is very useful.

You miss the point I make.

Neither the written word or the calculator by themselves make shyte up. AI does.

Yeah, when I use chatgpt to go through big log files and analyze stuff, you got to know what you are dealing with or AI will give you a command that can break your system easily. But even knowing its a little shady, I still use it, because it gives better results than normal search queries.

I am not denying that AI is useful without a doubt, and in the right usecases its amazing, but we can't just gloss over the fact that AI hallucinates and makes stuff up and we have people who will just believe AI.

The internet made us dumber, because we became shallower thinkers, lost the ability to focus for long durations on a single subject, and screwed up our dopamine.

AI will cause some atrophy of cognitive abilities for people who don’t make an effort to counter it.

Was coming to say that.

Our phones has us not remembering telephone numbers anymore. People no longer know how to read paper maps etc.

Remember the lost souls when Facebook and Twitter went down? It has become an addiction.

Nope. The internet was supposed to be a benefit to mankind. It has done more harm than good. AI will be exactly the same.

I think its more the way we used the technology when it comes to the internet, rather than the internet itself that has done the most harm.

AI will be similar in my view.

So ultimately yes, I agree with you, but not that the technology itself is inherently harmful.

Yes it’s what we built on top of it. Short form video, infinite scroll, ad economy, etc.

Also bad ideas spreading way too easily.

Using the internet in a healthy way is very difficult.

AI isn't intelligent it just have a large learning field, lets not pretend that we live in a world of true AI or that we will live in such a world in the near future. AI already makes up the story as it goes along. of course it's a situation of effluent in and effluent out for most people who start off with a low IQ.
