Maybe I am doing it wrong. I created my own 30 second music clip to use as reference for a song with my own lyrics on Suno.

I upload the audio and it just plays that. I tried entering the lyrics and then upload the music and it still just plays the music. How do I get Suno to add my audio to the lyrics?

You have to extend the uploaded sample. Suno continues from the timestamp you select using the sample as a reference to continue the track, eg if you want to use the entire 30 second sample, extend it from the end. If you only want to use part of it, input the timestamp from where you want Suno to continue.

Ok, I misunderstood how it works, I thought if you uploaded your own music and lyrics it would use those details for the song.

You upload your music clip and Suno finishes it. It uses the same style used in the clip and whatever tags you use to describe the music, and clones the voice if there are vocals in the clip. You can obviously give it the relevant lyrics to be used for the complete song.

I had almost given up on Suno, but then today I noticed they had a new feature - and oh my word, it is pretty freaking epic! You can make alternate versions of your songs - eg, if you have a pop song you can turn it into a club song, a rock song, or pretty much any other genre - Suno will keep the core melody the same, so the song remains faithful enough to the original that it doesn't seem like just a new song with the same lyrics.

As an example

Here's the original of Johnny isn't Real:

And here's the dance version :

Wow impressed. I love the story you chose

The cover feature is great for creating "live" versions of songs. I had done it before but it took quite a lot of work in that I had to cut up parts of songs and mix it up in DAW, to combine the music, interaction with the crowd, banter and background sound effects into a single track. Now it's a bit easier but it can take a few tries to get the desired output 100%.
