Aids/HIV/STD test

Just checked...and my medical aid covers the following:

Discovery KeyCare Plus: http://www.discovery.co.za/discover...th_professional/keycare_gp_pathology_form.pdf

Hep A, B and I think C.
HIV Elisa Test (Not West Bank Blood dot thingy) and also HIV viral load (knock on wood I should never need that one) as well as CD4 count

The other STD's I am not sure if they actually test for it using blood. They might test for that using those dip stick thingys and that aint expensive anyways me thinks. I seem to be pretty well covered.

I wonder if I should ask my doctore about getting vaccinated against Hep B and HPV??? I dont want him to think I am paranoid or something.

On a side note, I see the blood work form I've got here has 3 HIV tests list: R120, R200 and R900. No idea what the diff is though.

It's the accuracy of the test i.e. level of viral activity the test is able to detect. The normal/cheaper ones have the wide 3-6 month period detection. The more expensive ones can pick it up sooner or something -shrug- must ask my sister.

fungal/yeast stuff via cotton swob/culture, syphilis, gonorrhea, hiv, hpv, hepatitis all via blood tests(assuming no other obvious symptoms).

I've only ever had HIV testing done :D
So it's entirely possible that you have one of the other STDs floating around, seeing as they generally present no symptoms in men. ;)

Sounds about right. I think the same thing applies to HIV...if the viral load is very very small then the immune system can fight it.
Not true at all. The HIV virus is a really tricky little bugger. It hides in the lymph nodes, which are used by the immune system. The body generally doesn't control the virus but there are a very select few people known as elite controllers and long-term non-progressors who have the ability to keep their viral loads low, sometimes for their whole lives. These individuals are few and far between though.

That's more than likely an Elisa, Western Blot and DNA PCR.

ROFL! West Bank Blood dot! Hahahaha! Your post had me in stitches, ousie! :D

It's called the Western Blot test and it's used as a confirmatory test when one of the other tests comes back positive.

Very unlikely :)

I don't even have herpes simplex (i.e. fever blisters et al). However, I do have latent herpes zoster (shingles) thanks to chicken pox when I was a kid :D

Where in Cape Town (southern suburbs?) can one get the general STDs checked for at reasonable cost or free? :)

Any clinic

Nah clinics will do only a few main ones and they will want some reason as to why you need to have it done if you do not present with any symptoms.

Clinics treat sti's on basis of the presence of symptoms due to the cost of tests.. This obviously does not apply to hiv and one or two basic nasties.

It's funny though.. Medicine is basically based on retroactively looking at symptoms then treating cause or managing symptoms while looking. Ironically this hasn't really changed over the years though e.g. Medical aids have tried proactively looking before symptoms present.. E.g. Discovery vitality health checks as this impacts their bottom line if they don't.

I honestly don't expect to test positive for anything but I have recently exited a relationship and am entering a new one so I wanna make sure. Plus one never knows if the ex was a skanky ho behind ones back!

So where should I go then if I don't want it to cost an arm and a leg?

Darn. OK, well what are the important STDs to check for, as a guy? I'm very well behaved, so this is just to get checked out for the new woman in my life, in case the old woman in my life was less than well behaved. I don't suspect the ex of that, but on the off chance , I should get checked out.

OK, so I realise what test should one get is along the lines of how long is a piece of string. I suppose I should do something along the lines of this test below, if I want to be sure!

I would not be surprised if that HIV 28 days test is the one that is pushing that price up. The HIV tests that cuts out the window period is normally very expensive. With those tests instead of waiting for 3 months for the anti bodies to HIV to develop and then testing for that, with these early detection tests they test for the actual virus wich is much more expenvise.

I'm going to have to try the nearest hospital perhaps. That Better2Know site doesn't list any of their partners in Cape Town.
