so my cars Aircon pump failed, Getz 1.4,
was making a weird grinding noise all this time and never understood why, until I opened the Bonnet the one time and saw smoke coming out the thing,
not sure if its the solenoid or pump bearing or something else that has gone and broke, smelt electrical smell so probably the solenoid blew up,

luckily, this cars designed well, and its not 1 belt but a few Belts and the aircon has its own Belt
take that belt off, and hey presto, no aircon, but I can still drive safely,

now to fix it, first of all wanted to ask can it be fixed? or do garages just replace the entire thing and call it a day?
secondly, do you replace the condenser as well, or is that not necessary? just uncouple the Compressor, fix the problem with the pump and regas the system afterwards?

saw some videos that suggest when the aircon compressor goes it sends pieces of metal into the condenser, that can cause damage afterwards.

can anybody give me an idea on costs?

Get a quote at an aircon place, that would give you a good base to work from, then you can decide what's the best option to follow.

There's an option to remove the compressor, take it to a place where they recondition them, put it back and get the car regassed. Whatever will make better financial sense.
