Sometimes the connection is torturously slow when transferring files to my PC. Have tested the connection quality and restarted by PC and phone yet the problem remains. Later or the following day the connection will be fine before the issue returns again. Any ideas why or what alternative app there is.

Have you checked your actual speed?
You can try ES File Explorer File Manager but it works using FTP.
