I wonder if anyone can assist me with the following problem I have encountered:
My iPhone 5 running AirDrop in iOS7 is not recognised on my iMac or MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5.
The iMac and the MacBook Pro see each other but none see my iPhone. I have turned the AirDrop on, on my iPhone.
Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Should be fine make sure wifi or bluetooth is turned on, Airdrop wraps these services to send and recive files on whichever is available.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

WiFi and Bluetooth are turned on. The iPhone 5 on iOS7 does not appear in the iMac or MBP drop zone.

Hey Bwana are you saying that the transfer of file between iMac and MBP will only work when Mavericks is launched?
That would be a real bummer!

Yes, unfortunately I am.

No, and no again.

AirDrop will work from iDevice to iDevice only. (Supporting iDevices, only)
Also from iDevice to iDevice - they must both be on the same WiFi network.

AirDrop to OS X doesn't work and Apple have said this is due to security risks involved with that method.

So you're saying that apple intends airdrop for OsX and airdrop for iOS to remain incompatible, even though they named them both airdrop?

That's exactly what I am saying.

One would think they would allow AirDrop from iOS to OS X and visa versa - but they'd be wrong.

With AirDrop you transfer between two devices of the same. OS X to OS X and iOS to iOS. Not iOS to OSX.

Well I think that is really a useless feature on the iPhone then.
I can transfer files between my iMac and MBP and it works great. But I was at least expecting that the same transfer would become possible between my iPhone and my desktop and laptop. What's the use of trying to integrate one's system by keeping to Apple products.
Where's the security risk if AirDrop could swop files with my iMac and MBP in close proximity. Why is my iMac and MBP connected via AirDrop not a security risk then?
I am really starting to have my doubts about Apple.

I agree it makes little point for AirDrop from iOS to iOS only. As for Apple's full reasoning behind this - you'd have to ask them.

After spending tens os thousands of Rand on Apple products I think it is now time to start removing the Apple bias from within my head. Apple have definitely gone backwards without the brilliant innovation of Steve Jobs.
I hope Microsoft has seen this gap and the short comings of the Apple System. With Nokia under their wing and a pending update to Windows 8 they may be the company to watch. Oh yes, and the departure of Steve Bulmer.

Good luck with MS and Nokia.
