My career revolves on travel management.
One of the basic queries are relating to date changes and the costs involved.
Here is a solution that I have offered a number of my clients to assist them in their queries.
Date changes are a necessary evil and nature of business travel.
This post is about saving you money by better understanding date changes and how we can avoid any unforeseen costs by minimizing date change penalties.
The necessary disclaimer; all information contained in this email is subject to change without notice and correct at time of correspondence. Costs below are used as examples and not representative of any actual costs.
All tickets are flexible in the sense that they permit changes to the dates, times and/or routes.
Airline will charge their admin this can ranges from R150 to R342 per change per flight sector for domestic flights and about R1000 to R2000 per change for international flights.
All changes are subject to flight availability.
The airline admin fee will be charged and any difference of cost will be charged.
If changes are made before departure any difference in airport taxes and/or exchange rate (international flights originating outside of South Africa) will also be charged.
Domestic Example - Before Departure:
Original SAA One Way Ticket R2500
New SAA One Way Ticket R3000
Charges:
Airline Admin Fee R342 excl. VATper sector
Difference in Taxes R35
Difference in Fare R500
Total Cost R877
The difference in ticket is the major factor in date change costs and can be as much as the original ticket cost if not more than the original ticket cost.
The only option to reduce the date change costs are by booking higher priced original tickets.
this will reduce the difference in ticket prices and will include date changes at no to minimal airline admin fees.
The biggest factor here is to consider the value of higher priced tickets compared to date changes.
I hope you have found this useful.
